M3's are generally pretty affordable to maintain. The S54 does need valve adjustments every 50-60k miles (??) which is a little pricey, ~$1000.

1000 doesn't sound bad at all!

Looks like the S5 will sticker for about $56k with the available option packages. I say get a 335i coupe for $50k, throw on some coilovers and a turbo tuner, and still keep $3k in your pocket. 335 with proper suspension will be way more fun than an S5. S5 is damn sexy though.

yeah look wise, S5 looks awesome but many people said that 335i is superior over S5 when it comes down to performance

btw guys, i need it later spring of 08 so i still got some time to search.
it won't be a problem if i stick with e46 m3 but if i get a new car, i should decide what i am going to order. (since it takes about 3 months to get it)

Quick question, how does CPO work?
Do you have to get the used car from BMW dealer to get CPO?

If your family wants to give me a great deal on a C2S, I'll make a drive up to LI

911 > 335i > S5

not a certain amount, i was planning to order e92 m3 but i am a student at VT (2nd year engineering) so i was just trying to spend as low as possible and pick it up once i graduate (since i always wanted P car).
my mom drives cayenne s and we paid 75000 OTD...considering the base price of cayenne S 57900 vs base 911 73500...i just cant imagine...

very interesting and thank you very much for even offering that!

just out of curiosity, how far is your place from DC? just curious

That's a little misleading. That $1,000 covers MUCH more than just valve adjustment, such as oil change, tranny fluid change, diff oil change, spark plug change, etc.

M3's can be as cheap to maintain as a Nissan/Infiniti if you're a DIY type of guy. Comparing against the cost of Nissan/Infiniti parts, some parts cost similar (especially if you know where to buy them!), some parts cost much more. The consumable fluids seem to cost the most; castrol tws costs $9-15/liter (x6), diff oil costs around $75/pint (x3), tranny fluid costs around $25/liter (x3), coolant costs around $30/gallon. The castrol tws engine oil is a VERY good oil (group 4/5 hybrid) so I think it's worth it.

The local dealers around me wanted $30/spark plug when the exact same NGK spark plug on sparkplugs.com cost $12/plug -- similar to the cost of NGK plugs for Nissan/Infiniti.

The only other consumable part that caught me by surprise were the brake pads. A full set cost me around $200! Then again, the Hawk HP Plus I had before did not fit correctly so there was an annoying click/rattle when driving over bumps.

///Michael
