All this talk about how much the M3 weights...

(most of it by E46 owners), and Car & Driver finds it weighs 177 lbs more than the E46 M3. That's less than the weight gain from the E36 to E46 M3's. I remember when the E46 came out and all the E36 owners said it was a pig and looked too big and was ugly. Sound familiar???

According to Car & Driver, the E90 M3 is 242 lbs lighter than the RS4 and 463 lbs lighter than the C63.
So enough with the weight issues. It's not a lightweight, but it's no pig either, especially considering it's about the size of the E39.

an engine that weighs less then the outgoing I6, a CF roof and how many other weight saving techniques lengths did BMW go through for it to gain weight...

at least MB doesn't pretend their cars are supposed to be light...

People still think the E46 is too heavy. Hence CF body panels, lightweight mufflers and batteries, etc. It's not that the E92 is a fat heavy pig, it's that it's heavier than the outgoing model. That in and of itself is the wrong direction.

I could think of couple ways to reduce the weight on the E46. You can start by buying a car without nav, heated/power seats. Replace the heavy stock exhaust system with a titanium system, get some CSL headers. Remove the battery and place it with lightweight version. Take out the spare tire. I think that's a good 75-100 lbs right there.

bmw def made people think the car was going to be lighter with all the use of CF this and that, and the car is still 200 lbs heavier. imagine how heavy it would have been had they not used all that stuff. the m3 vert is going to be 4000+ lbs! i think that the e46 m3s without sunroof, without power/heated seats and no nav are prob in the low 3300 range or high 3200 range...then do a full exhaust and new wheels youre decently light, still not Porsche light, but it helps. e92, e90 m3 are fugly as can be and heavy. they are also bigger cars, longer, taller, etc.

That isn't true. A no option M3 doesn't weigh that little, the published weight by BMWNA is 3415 (for a car w/ no options) and by BMW in Germany 1470KG. The new car is 1655KG with no options (an increase of 85kg). Not only that, but the new car includes items standard which add weight (like power seats).

The new car is heavier, and I don't like that. But let's not warp reality, the the E46 is still a hefty car compared with a RWD 996 or 997, and everyone can draw a line in the sand in a differnet place, I know people that draw it between the E30 and E36, people who draw it between the E36 and the E46 and people who draw it between the E46 and the forthcoming E92 but there is no more validity to any person's imaginary line than the next.

Furthermore, given the weight increase between the E36 and the E46, the increase between the E46 and the E92 should have less of an effect because of a) a smaller percentage increase, given that absolute values are similar (when looking at US cars) and b) usage of materials in an effort to lower the CG of the car which has a lot to do with the apparent weight of a vehicle. What this means its that it's more logical to put the line in the sand between the E36 and E46 than it is to put it between the E46 and the E92.

The parts you mention, Kaz (excluding the spare), can be done to ANY car. But for a DD performance car, most people don't want to give up a sunroof, heated/power seats, etc. We want to keep those items and still see 3200-3300 lbs.

i *thought* there were people who weighed there cars that light. i KNOW they arent light by any means. its sad but true, theyre not sports cars, theyre more of GT cars these days. BMW thinks they can just bump up 75 hp each time and add more gadgets and keep people happy. some they will, but to the people who actually enjoy driving for the experience, most of us wont like these things.

isnt the weight gain from added safety features that a production car with 400+ hp and seats four people have to have?

If you compare the weight of the E39 M5 (3,800 lbs) to the E90, it's a huge difference. The E90 is almost the same size as the E39 and has a V8.

And like Smoltz said, there's no way a stock E46 M3 (even stripped) weighs 3,200 lbs. He'll, an E36 weigh more than than stock.

Yep, it's making me wanna buy another car and keep my M3 and just slap a HPF 750 kit on it
