Rev crazy

I am in the market for a used 2008 M5 and today i found one that has a low mileage on it and they were giving quite a good price.

When i went to see the car today, i went to start the car up. During the first 30 seconds after i press the engine button, the rev was going up and down between 1500rpm and 500 rpm.

I asked the dealer, not a BMW dealer, and the sales guy told me that it was normal because the car has not been warm up for quite sometime.

My question is, Is it normal and if it is not, any suggestion on what i should do?

I'm very very new in BMW world.

Anyway, this is the link for the car. anyone know about the story behind it or anyone has done business with them before? inputs are greatly appreciated.

I don't have an M5 but saw your post and since no-one with one has popped on yet I thought I'd stick my nose in to try to help (esp since I used to lurk around Cayman Club and think its a great site )

If i were you I'd try calling a BMW dealer and seeing what they say, after all the car is under warranty. I'd also ask if they would check what was in the system for the car based on the VIN, any warranty repairs or other dealer services. I have found dealers to vary a bit with regards to how they handle this request, some do it np, some want to charge, others have said they need permission from the current owner (in which case Rector should assist). Hell if there is a good close by BMW dealer perhaps Rector will let you take it there so they can plug it in (sorry I can't help there, only have serviced BMWs elsewhere in Bay Area).

Also, if this is normal, it very likely will be mentioned in the manual, i know other cars I have had will describe all idling behavior for different situations, ie "The idle speed may not be steady when the engine compartment is extremely hot."...

Anyway, hope that helps a bit. Good luck with it, nice color

I test drove a new M5 recently. I did not notice the idle problem you mentioned. My advice would be to get a PPI from a BMW dealer without fail. Sales of the M5 are very soft. The price is a little high IMO.

It's normal, just a cold start - the e46 M3 would do it like crazy as well, nothing to worry about, once the car warms up just a bit, it smooths itself out

Normal for the M5/M6 to do that... Still you want to get the car checked out. Is the title clean?

Once you get it, you will never look back...I went from the e46 M3 to the M6 coupe then Cabrio... wicked fun to drive!

thanks for the reply guys!

I am still deciding whether i should go with the car. I agreed with someone that said that the price is a little too high. When i look around for prices, i think they can do lower. Right now they are giving me 70k flat. Plus taxes and everything else. which will have a grand total around 77k.

If i were to go with the car, the dealer told me that i could bring the car to any dealer to get a full inspection.

Now i am faced with a new problem that i started on another thread. I hope you guys can help me out.

thanks guys!
