Is 2006 M5 good car? looking to purchase...
This man speaks the truth. I haven't had any problems with mine but a few have been known to have them. As long as you have the warranty you're set. And you can probably find an 07 in the 50's range. The prices of these cars have gone down dramatically, but I have actually noticed they're coming up in the past several weeks.
Not 100% sure about this, but I believe that BMW is NOT CPOing any of the cars with V10 engine (M5/M6).
Your best bet would be an aftermarket warranty, but be prepared to pay for it, and be sure to read all the fine print.
Good luck!

Greg...you are correct. I hadn't checked in a while, but I do remember a lot of talk about BMW not CPOing the E60 M5.
Here is a link of when they started doing it (mid 2008): http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...poed-e60s.html
Here is an old one when they were not (2007): http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum.../t-858170.html
I am glad they decided to CPO the V10s now.

Great car to drive, but as others have said, do your research. These are not cheap cars to maintain, and make sure you have a warranty. Remember the oil alone costs about $14 a quart, 10 quarts per oil change and it burns a quart every couple thousand miles. That is just one example. If you can get the CPO though, its a great bargain for the performance capabilities.
Not true, not true at ALL........I have NEVER had ANY Passengers complain about the SMG.......If I am trying to impress them.......then the hard shifts IMPRESS them......if I am driving kids and grandparents around....then I drive accordingly and they are just FINE.....as far as less comfort....of course......it's more of a sports car

others disliked the shifting when riding with passengers

Not to give you any promises. 2 friends shopping around for e60 M5's last week. Prices w 35k miles 06 manual M5 were as low as $35.700 and up... 6 cars in total under 40k 2006 M5 here in Miami area......
Look around for good price!

Regarding the SMG issues what I would recommend is stay away from early MY builds in the '06 M5's. Beyond May builds are fine.
BTW this talk by some about the SMG being annoying or difficult to drive or to get it down I fine ridiculous.
It is a great tranny and my M5 dyno'ing 581 rwhp and 461 rw torque has never given a hint of a problem. I mean nights on the dragstrip and running more than 25 passes ***** out and no problem. The clutch can over heat with the burnouts though.
Anyway my 2 cents.

GT3Ranger,
I recently picked up an 06 M5. What is the best mod for the buck in your opinion? I am not looking for crazy HP, just a little more juice. It seems like it is pretty hard to squeeze out more power from these cars with simple mods.

Hey jlee,
First great acquisition. I love my M5 and do not see letting it go especially now with the fully built TT motor being done by ASR Engineering.
I would consider the ASR tune, CAI from ASR and the ASR gen. II full exhaust ( from stock headers back --- secondary cats out ).
Pulleys are cheap now so maybe a pulley.
All these components make proven rwhp.
Call Abid at ASR (tell him Ranger recommended). (786)258-0009.
Good luck with the M5

Thanks for the info GT3Ranger. I will look them up. When the e60 M5 first came out I test drove it twice(less than 10 minutes each) and was not too impressed with the power. However, now that I have spent a few days with the car, I am starting to appreciate the performance potential of the car. This is definitely a car that short test drives do not give it justice.
I actually started thinking of the M5 as my daily driver(My DD at the time was an 05 545i) after reading this thread and on the first day of looking found the right car! It is interesting how one thing leads to another.

Should be picking up my E60 sometime this weekend I hope. Ive test driven 2 and one was back in the summer and just test drove this one last weekend and decided to get it
. I absolutely love the car and everything about it. A friend of my that was with me was asking me if I was gonna like the SMG because of my previous cars being all stick, I turned to him after doing some pulls and down shifts that I had noooo problem at all haha.

i don't think there were a lot of 'lemons', just that you hear about all the problems on the boards but don't hear about the cars that weren't a problem. i think bmw has been pretty aggressive in getting things fixed, and i haven't really heard a lot about the cars lately. they just haven't performed well in the market, but seem to be pretty great sedans. i've stuck with my e39 however.
