hey guys just picked up an 06 m5 42k miles black on black.......im in love .BUT when i listen to the engine i hear a knocking /rattle in the engine almost exactly like my 997supercharger, is that normal?

 

Yes. If its very loud then now. It does have a rattling sound to it.. its the double VANOS system.

 

Is it a rattling noise or a clicking noise? Has inspection II been performed? Depending on how the car was driven, I have seen some ///M cars have inspection II done in that milage range.

Considering your car is '06, I would assume you have warranty left? Take it to the dealer, can't hurt.

 

inspection II ? im going to call the dealer tomorrow to set up an apointment.

 

If the rattle is like marbles in a tin can...then you have a VANOS issue....from whom did you buy the car??...get the services records.

Inspection II is a maintanence interval. The order is Oil Change, Inspection I, Oil Change, Inspection II. During Inspection II the cars valves are adjusted; sometimes if these are not adjusted, you will hear a slight clicking noise from the engine.

If it is a VANOS issue, I doubt the previous owner knows anything about it or will be able to help you resolve it. As stated earlier, since yours is an 06, you should be able to go to the dealer and get it resolved, be at Vanos. If your inspection II is due, you will have to pay that out of pocket and that can range from 1600-2500, depending on the dealership.
