I sold my 2007 M5 -smg for an E90 dct M3. The M5 was definitely faster over 120 but the M3 was more usable/tossable/fun to drive for my needs and daily driving-not to mention it's a bit easier on gas. The DCT is dramatically better than SMG and the auto mode works as it should. It might not be a better car than the M5 for all, but for my use it definitely is. I've owned 3 versions of the M5 and always found it too heavy. The M3 is no lightweight but it's size and handling dynamics are better and makes it more maneuverable. It has an excellent motor that is similar but just can't quite match the M5's top end push. The M3 simply fit the bill better for 98% of my driving

 

I vote E60 M5.
