Has anyone turbo'd a X5 4.6is???

I recently bought a 4.6is as my dd but I am looking for more. My last dd was a lightly modded Lightning that did 13.3's in the 1/4 mile (and only got a couple mpg's worse than the X5) and 14.9 is just too slow. Am I going to have to build my own turbo kit or is there anyone out there that has done the hard part for me?

I have checked out all the s/c kits and I am not really that impressed with them. I have a centrifugal on my play car now and it gets a little annoying having to rev out so much to get the power. For a dd I want some low end power that I can use on the street all the time. Even a roots style blower would work....

Maybe you should have thought in advance?

If you are expecting big mod potential and torque, step it up to the factory twin turbo SUV's.

This is not the advise/help I was looking for. SRT8 is not what I am looking for or I woud have bought one (my brother had one and had nothing but trouble with it....a powerful performer in every respect, yes, but it's still a Dodge and it breaks a lot). My Favorite SUV since inception is the 4.6is. That's what I got. I work with a platform that I like and this is it.
That's one of the reasons I didn't buy one of the new M's. I really do not like the way they look as much or having what anyone else can get. Myself and a good friend of mine (a long time user on the bimmer forums (you can see some of the cars we have done on there)) work on being unique. I don't want what anyone else can easily have. I want it to be mine, and I want it to be fast.
I want to build a reliable 4.6is without having to spend a ton of cash and be able to smoke tuned Cayenne turbos and make Ferraris wonder...Isn't that what everyone wants??? Have your cake and....
I guess the better question is do I have to build a turbo kit for this and let everyone here follow the build?

If you want the platform then accept the platform for what it is.

If you want a twin turbo SUV it is flat out the wrong platform. The only way you are going to get turbos is to get a custom setup, best of luck with that. It would simply be cheaper to get the SUV with turbos from the factory, logical.

Why would you not have thought of any of this before you bought it?

Yes, you will basically have to build a turbo setup yourself if you are determined to have it.

No, what everyone wants from an SUV is not smoking Cayenne turbos and making Ferrari's wonder. The thought about smoking a Ferrari never crossed my mind when I was picking up my Cayenne.

Any pics of your SUV?

I think it's going to cost you a virtual fortune to build a 4.6 that will smoke a CTT, ///M, or anything > a 308 Ferrari.

If you do build it, post up some pics.. it would be a hell of an engineering project.

Props for ambition!
This can definitely be done, but it's important to identify the real goal?
Goal - to have twin turbos in a x5?
Goal - to have 500 whp and twin turbos in an x5?
Goal - to have 500 whp and a turbo?
Goal - to have 500 whp, v8 4.6L and twin turbos and dd?

Being specific about the goals may lead to different techniques for achieving it - that can be easier or more difficult in your application.

There's definitely no kit for this.. and unlikely someones done it [if so please post!]..but there are lots of similarities between the e53 and say an e39, and between the 4.6L and say the 4.4L M62 engine used in the e39 540. I know for a fact someone's turobo'd and M62 engine in the e39 and maybe can learn from some of thier pitfalls.

The biggest issue by far will be tuning... finding someone to retune the dme [especially around here], is impossible.. but findiing someone at all to retune the dme is even a challenge. Neg's - obd2, bosch, flash, emmissions.

Ideas: 1) use tuning from off the shelf sc so you can idle with big injectors?
2) standalone
3) call GIAC and beg

Love the ambition though.. as that's how you really make a difference.

I appreciate your dedication. But doing this project and doing it "without having to spend a ton of cash" is not realistic. Have fun w/it. Will be unique...

being the owner of both a 02 4.6 and a 02 4.6 S3 dinan, at the same time (dont ask)....dont waste your money...it was faster, but not worth the 11-16 K youll speand
as far as the silly comments some have made, ignore them.
I have layed it all out...done most the the r&d..planning etc etc...you could build a cool single turbo setup that should take you into the 500 hp range for about 5-6K...doing the fab work yourself....ad maybe $1500 to pay someone else for the fab stuff....tunning can be done easily since its a the 4.6...if it was a 4.8, your screwed.
the only think that sucks is the slow shifting tranny...even in sport/manual it is slow. I was looking at swapping in a manual....
other projects have taken my time...i sold the dinan truck now...and the other one is my DD/work truck....cant have it down for even a day.

if you want...i would build it for you...if you need referance, or other cars i have built, just ask.
here is the last car i built...just sold it to another 6speeder
I have decided to sell my baby…It is the 93 NSX shown here in the pictures. It has been great car for me The car was bought by me from the original owner and has spent its entire life in Arizona, Florida or Dallas. I have owned it for about four years. During this time I have spent considerable time in building what I feel is the ultimate, streetable NSX. No area of this car has been overlooked…From the braking, to the body and paint to the 665 plus horsepower…..no shortcuts, no expense spared…just the best car I could put together. Now that it is finished and I have enjoyed it I would like to start the next project…The wife says I need to sell one of my toys first though…
This car was built to be driven…I drive this car between 8000-12000 miles a year and it has never failed in anyway. It handles like it is on rails and is quick enough to give your stomach butterflies.

I promise, you will not see another NSX like this, anywhere. People will stop you to talk…people will stare at you at traffic lights….people will take pictures at gas stations…it definitely draws attention.
The car is featured on the cover of the April 2009 issue Modified Magazine with a full article inside.
This car would cost a little over $120k to duplicate and while I don’t have to sell this car, I would like to see it go to a good home. I feel it is priced accordingly and fairly. I may also be open to trades…don’t be shy make me an offer.
If you have any questions you can contact my anytime, with any questions.
I have the title in hand and can help arrange shipping if needed.
Asking $58500
