Nice run fellas. DCT has growing on me since I've got used to my SMG. It can only be better.

Drew/Kioeken:

Can either of you comment as to why the results were the way they were?

I would think the 4.10's in the 6sp manual would really help. Actually...I did some checking on the gear ratios.

Seems like with the DCT...the engine rpm is higher than the 6spm upon each shift through 4th gear.

In addition, the DCT only goes up to 97mph in 3rd gear where as the 6spm goes all the way to 113mph. So the overall gearing is taller on the 6spm. The DCT is much shorter and accordingly can accelerate much faster. It doesn't appear that the 4.10 gears on the 6spm is enough to make up for the extra gear that the DCT has and how each gear is set at.

Here are the gear ratios:
Gear / Ratio / Max Speed / RPM
drop on shift
1st 4.780 44
2nd 2.933 71 5200
3rd 2.153 97 6200
4th 1.678 124 6500
5th 1.390 150 6900
6th 1.203 173 7300
7th 1.000 208 7000
Final Ratio 3.154
Redline 8400

BMW M3 6-speed
Gear / Ratio / Max Speed / RPM drop on upshift
1st 4.055 44
2nd 2.396 75 4900
3rd 1.582 113 5600
4th 1.192 150 6300
5th 1.000 179 7000
6th 0.872 205 7300
Final Ratio 3.678
Redline 8400

The DCT only accelerates quicker through the 1/8, past this point, the gearing advantage is with the manual as you are spending more time in gear with more torque @ the axle. The shift speed of the DCT mitigates the manual's gearing advantage to a point not to mention it has the lead up until the end of the 3rd gear on paper. That is difficult to overcome if you don't have substantially more power, 4.10's increase the shifts necessary at lower speeds while hurting the manual's original top end advantage just accentuating the gear change advantage of the DCT.

I'm going to lengthen my gearing a bit my at the strip next month and we will see what happens, I expect some gains on the top end.

I suspect the fact that there is very little to no momentum loss with the DCT helps as well. If you've seen my vids, 6MT cars that I run with much more power actually start to pull for a second at certain speeds then fall back when they shift, once they get to higher speeds, longer gear, they creep away, but by then the run is usually over. On Vbox graphs you can see the shifts cause no loss in acceleration, sometimes they appear to help it!

Here's a graph from a 6MT

BTW, when are you going to join us in Mexico Bro!
