Back in the BMW Family...X5 4.8i

Well, the wife's 08 MDX just wasn't cutting it. So I picked her up a new daily...X5 4.8i with cold weather package, premium sound, sport package, 20" wheels, tire pressure monitor, power tailgate, dark bamboo wood, 3rd row seat, iPod and USB, HD Radio, premium package, rear climate package, technology package, adaptive driving, adaptive steering, comfort access, roof rails, 3rd row climate control, panoramic roof, heated front/rear seats, heads-up display......and I think that's it.

Anyone here have this truck? Anything to look out for? I hear the outer edges of the front tires wear quickly??? Any other feedback... For now I'm driving it more than her!!! I told her "if you wanna go somewhere, take the GTR, I'm driving the X....

Nice. You really loaded yours! Is it new or used? I'm looking for one for my wife. Just so difficult to find one with tech/premium/sport pkgs in the 'right' color for the 'right' price.

My wife's DD is a 4.8 X5. This is her third X5 in a row with a total of 200K miles between them. It is as solid as a rock. The only bugs for me are the rear camera and the rear hatch. The rear camera has terrible resolution. It's almost unusable. The rear hatch has broken 3 times. We have the auto shut which is a bit temperamental. It works like a garage door. If it senses that something is to close to mechanism, it will stop. This is an issue if it's raining and you're trying to load and unload quickly. The other thing I see is that you have the big wheels which are the best looking that BMW offers for the car. Mine came with these but there wasn't all weather tires available for them which will not fly here in the northeast. So I switched them out. I would think that you will be fine in TX but I would still be careful in lots of rain. Ask the dealer what he thinks. Other than that you will love it. There's a lot of techy stuff in the cabin that's cool and some you have to get used to like the push button park and E-brake. The nav is the best I've ever experienced. Again there is a lot of stuff that you can do with the system that I still don't take advantage of. By the way we have had AMG cars an Cayenne Turbo and Infinity and Acura SUV's. The BMW is the only one we have bought again. Enjoy.

Jay - thanks for the feedback, very valuable information! Here in Houston, all season tires really aren't necessary...the worst we get is some rain!

So far we are loving the truck!!!

Congrats on the 4.8 sport

I got my wife a white 4.8 with the 20 in. wheels back in March. Its a great SUV. I prefer it to the Cayenne from my experience.

Yes, it does wear tires. Depending on driving style, you should get 16-22k mi. from a set. The rubber is very expensive. I have snows on the car now, but come spring, I'll be putting the non-runflat version of the 20 inch Bridgestone that comes on some X5/X6s and exclusively on the Ms. They're 1/2 as much$ and will ride better.

Do be careful in rain. I've had the car hydroplane driving as slow as 70 even with good tread. They're super wide tires, no way around the rain issue.

Car is uber comfortable and has really surprising handling if you push it. Personally, I wished the transmission was a little lazier in drive. I don't like downshifts or high rpms when putting around town.

Now if we can just plug the hole(s) in the gas tank, we'll have the perfect car!

Enjoy!

Very nice, last month I picked up a new 09 X6 for a daily and love it. My father drives a X5 (his second now) and keeps coming back because these are such amazing machines. Perfect size, very comfortable, agressive looks and extremely reliable ( the 4yr inclusive maintenance is a nice bonus.

Yes they do like tires, but the cupping is mainly due to the camber and sport suspension I think. His previous 4.8 had the same appetite for tires.

The 4.8 exhaust tone is perfect, not ovely loud but emits a nice growl that suits this beast.

I see you chose the 20" wheels that come standard with the sport package and suit the truck very well, in my opinion a close second. Did you by any chance get to see the 21" style 215's in the flesh? OMG, these totally change the look, extremely aggressive stance, but also cost an arm and a leg, the local dealer has them for 6200 plus taxes as an OEM accessory, Am trying to find a less expensive source for these in Ferric grey, but may have to splurge a little come spring:=)

The 215's are on the black X5 and i think the ones on the white X5 are style 128. Its never too early to be thinking of gift ideas

Sorry for the third post, but this vehicle excites me:-)
I have also noticed that the BMW SUV's seem to hold their value a little better than other comparable SUV's in this price range (RR, Caddy, MB, Porsche)

You will find out come trade in time.

Wow, those 21's look SWEET!!!!! As for the tires, I thought initially that maybe it was just a too much positive camber as many ppl report the outside edges wearing pre-maturely....but maybe that's just the way the tires wear with the SPORT package set-up. Time will tell... In the meantime we'll keep enjoying her.

drspeed - what Bridgestone model are you talking about?

thanks,
Peter

Just picked up a '10 X5 with the tech package. I absolutely love the interface of the computer. It's so intuitive and the iPod, bluetooth and navi are all great. I love the fact that it has a hard drive and I can upload all my CD's onto it. Now I gotta get those 20's on there tomorrow!

Congrats

Enjoy the new X. Its a great vehicle.

Penny's worth of free advice: if you're buying the 20inch wheels and tires, consider the bridgestone dueler H/P which come on the M X cars exclusively, but do it in a non-run flat. Same tread pattern as the run flats, but $300 less for the set and better grip and ride

That's what I'm doing with our X5. It goes through rubber in about 20k mi.

Good luck with the new ride.

Regards,
David
