Shorter gear ratios vs Taller

Ok im a dummy and i know nothing about shorter gear ratios ETC, but i would realy apreacte if u could help me on this subject because somone would be willing to make my gear ratios shorter.

Im going to give a good example car to start off with E92 m3 6 speed
now this car really has no torque but it has alot of HP at high rpms 8000+. So if u make the gear ratios shorter this will= into getting into your powerband alot quicker? Or would it = gving u more torque to the wheels until u shift again?

i understand shorter gear ratios will have a lower top speed , but does that mean it will result in a slower 60-130mph time then stock gears?

And finally if the cars makes 420hp@ 8500rpm stock, does that mean if u make shorter gears it will make less hp @ 8500rpm?

TY sorry for the stupid question but im dumb when it comes to tuning

First, I wouldn't describe the M3 engine as having no torque - almost 300lb-ft means it's no slouch. Maybe it's just higher up the rev band than you're used to.

To answer your question, a shorter final drive ratio will make the car faster in all gears with a lower top speed; in most cases that's irrelevant since your theoretical top speed will still be faster than the 155-limiter. As for your hp question, changing your final drive won't change your max hp point, but you'll hit it more quickly.

You essentially trade gas mileage for increased amounts of torque. One of the biggest drawbacks to an upgraded final drive as that your highway cruising rpm will be much higher than you may like.

Gears do not affect power output, but function to multiply the engine torque. Numbers reported as Wheel torque values (WTQ) along with WHP tend to be back calculated. Also, you will find that most dyno runs are done in the gear with closest to 1:1 ratio.

The car already runs a 3.85 gearset stock.

Yes they are low on torque, and high on HP (comparably). Thrust is achieved by the engine speed, the torque and the short gear ratio.

As above, gearing does not affect and engines horsepower output.
