Next Generation M3 Officially Coming with Straight Six

Read it here: Next Generation M3 Officially Coming with Straight Six

The next iteration of the M3 will have it returning to it's original cylinder layout. Purists should be glad to hear that, but they should know that it won't be naturally aspirated.

Still the V8 M3 is popular, even though there were more than a few that scoffed when it was originally announced. What do you think? Will it be a step backwards or a return to form?

they have no choice but to go with smaller turbo engine to meet economy, emissions regulations. bmw, audi, etc all in same boat. it will no doubt be nice but i always would prefer a hi revving engine to a turbo

waiting to see and drive before passing judgment, but as someone who's owned the BMW twin turbo 6 and the V8 back to back, i have to say that i am prepared to be disappointed. i'm sure that the new 6TT will be more powerful than today's V8, but i think the V8 is the far better engine

thats the way everyone is headed.

I agree there is nothing like driving a naturally aspirated V8 or V10(s85) that revs past 8,000 rpm and on top of that has 7 gears. But then again cars with FI respond much better to modifications.

How many guys with E60 M5's or M6's have 20-25k in bolt ons(intake/header/exhaust/tune, etc) and cant even get into the 11's?
The F10 M5 with just a flash($1500 at the most) should be deep into the 11's

I miss the days of old with the little 4 banger that lived on the red line, but needless to say I can't wait to take the next rendition of the M3 out for a spin!

wish they make it a high revving turbo, so it has great power under the curve. ad i hope they make it a bit more agressive!!! like the e46 m3 with big fender flares.

What happened to BMW's tri-turbo plans? I remember hearing about a 3rd electric turbo that would virtually eliminate lag while the two conventional turbos spooled.

Why move forward, when you can take a giant step backwards, and still sell cars?

BMW can't go wrong either way, either high revving NA or turbo.
