Starting this thread to see what opinions/feelings members have regarding the i8 release. I personally think the car looks great but needs much much more motor to compete in its class. I would hope bmw will make an m model with the m5 motor replacing the 3 cylinder (don't know if that's even feasible but would be one ridiculous package).
Underpowered. Overpriced. Marginal stats. Doors are nice.
It'll sell, but only out of a prurient desire to have something new and different - not because it does anything particularly special or excels in any category.

it's the perfect car for the Silicon valley CEO who thinks he is Tony Stark but doesn't want to be the 5th guy to show up at the bar in a Lambo that night. It's a great conversation piece, but not what a track day enthusiast replaces his GT3 with.
i dont know whats wrong with bmw lately (and the past few years) but they need to get their head out of their azz'z . in the design department and the power department.
mercedes and audi imo are ahead of the game ... but a good bit.

They are trying to compete with Tesla here, not Lambo. You get a car that is not range limited like the Tesla, is extremely frugal on fuel, hopefully handles like a BMW, and is good looking. I agree it is overpriced, but then again so are most of their high end cars these days. To compete with Tesla they will need to be around the $100k mark just like the Tesla S is...but I for one like it, even though I can't afford it.
Just playing a little devil's advocate here....

Tesla realized this and created a dominate electrical vehicle.
What is the BMW? Like I said, it represents an important step for BMW, but charges a premium price while excelling in no particular category.
