man.... next time someone wants to turn down a M5 at MSRP, please give me a call. I'll take the car in a heartbeat.
M5 just fits what I want and need very well. With 2 growing kids that really don't fit in the back of the 996 anymore. This might satisfy my and the family's needs.

Economy and gas prices. If you drive a lot of miles (typical for a luxury sedan) it adds up quickly with a V10. Personally I would love to see gas prices at $5 per gallon ... means less cars and less cops on the road
I don't really care much for the looks, but it is the top sports sedan in the market -- bar none.

Two other thing really hurt the M5 IMO. The CLS55. For folks that want to be the first with a new shape in the neighborhood the M5 ain't gonna cut it .. it looks just like another 5 series. Also the 545 is huring M5 sales. For me SMG III is the main selling point, and I am gonna run the V10 on a SS muffler.
So no .. you are not crazy. People have choices ... well except for Ferrari.

not crazy imo. I agreed to pay $5k over msrp but negotiated getting the Extended warranty and maintanence at dealer cost. So paying about $4k over msrp.
I felt like i was crazy but after figuring the hassle of ordernig it having it shipped for @1k. I was paying about $3k over msrp from a dealer 10 miles away and getting it in 2 weeks.

Tentatively I take delivery this Saturday at 10AM.
The dealer called today and said that the paperwork has cleared and awaiting transport. Assuming it gets loaded on a trailer tomorrow, it should be here on Thursday Friday at the latest.

delayed again
According to a post on m5boards.
As of today USA M5's are still blocked. Cars that have arrived at the VPC are still awaiting the CARB certification (California emissions) before release. The certs include California and four other states. So the E60 M5 is 45-state ready now. I hear the hope is for the certificate to be issued today 10/5 or tomorrow 10/6, but word is that it could be as late as Wed. 10/12 before any cars can be released to the dealers. This is a formality that all cars go through and at this point it's all about a red stamp on paperwork.

You didn't overpay at all. I would pay $5k over just to get one, because I could turn around and have somebody pay me $10-20k to get one. People are crazy about these cars....!!

I'll get one, but I'm gonna wait for a manual '07 or '08.
