Turned down the M5 @ MSRP- Crazy?

Why does the demand for the M5 seem flat? It seems to me a lot of people are on the list, but they're dropping out when their slot is up. Which I just did. Actually forgot I was on the list.
For me, it's just too big and too electronic. I think I would like SMG III but all the other crap is just too much... I wonder how resale would be in a year?

Hmm, I am on the list as well as many other people I know. While some are dropping out, the demand is still very high, and the car will be very hard to get at MSRP for the first few months, or years. I am considering dropping my slot, only for a M6 though.

People who buy a M5 know they are buying a M5, I mean you said big. What did you really expect small?

the demand atm is still high in most places, but give it about another 15 months and the demand won't nearly be as much as now. so a good way to not really get affected by resale value is to get the car while it's in demand and sell it aprox 9 months later when the demand starts to slow down.

The demand will slow for them just like every other hot" car...The only one that never change is the demand for the Prancing Horse..

Paul I myself am a small car guy and would not drive an M5 een though I LOVE that and the CLS55 just too big for me and they will never handle like a 2 door sports coupe no matter how stiff the suspension is and how much HP they put under the hood...nothing subsititutes for weight distribution and pure physics..

not crazy imo. I agreed to pay $5k over msrp but negotiated getting the Extended warranty and maintanence at dealer cost. So paying about $4k over msrp.

I felt like i was crazy but after figuring the hassle of ordernig it having it shipped for @1k. I was paying about $3k over msrp from a dealer 10 miles away and getting it in 2 weeks.

I never understood that mentality. Why buy a car you plan on driving for a few months then sell it? Most people who can afford a BMW have enough money to keep it, and have many other cars. If you are worried about resale value, get a Toyota Prius, or Honda hybird!

Ferrarislave, I don't know where you're shopping, but M5's can be had @ MSRP right now, not years later. Don't buy your dealer's hype pal.
BTW, most BMW owners do not have warehouses full of cars. Some of us prefer shorter term relationships.

I didn't say I was going to over pay, but I was saying the demand is still very high and that it will still be hard for most to get the car at MSRP.

I was saying most BMW owners, have more then just there BMW. I think the short term realationship thing is overhyped, and that the people who do it are not enthusiasts. They are simply posers, they get what is currently hard to get, most expensive, and hyped at the moment. Gallardo came get out, they all got it, now there all on the F430, next its the M6 etc... etc...

You don't understand why someone would want to drive the world's best cars when they first come out then flip them before they depreciate and get another? They have to store them to get your seal of approval?
If I could afford it, I would drive something different every week.
If that makes me a poseur at least I'm in good company around here.

Just a difference in opinion thats all. I would never change cars every week, or day. Even if I could buy a new every day, I wouldn't. I would settle on 5-6 cars and keep them, no telling how long, I would eventually change them. But I wouldn't use my cars like toliet paper: use it once, then flush it.

Well, even though it looks like a pig, it's a fast ****ing pig. I've spec'ed mine out - no inflated price here in Indy.

Once I get my garage lift, this will be in the bottom bunk with car seats in it!

there's many reasons why I do this
a) you get a car that everyone wants, get to drive the crap out of it
b)sell it for almost no loss in value!
c)if you get bored of the car
d)need space in garage for something new

I love the new M5, but the M6 is pure sex!!

I hear ya Mike S, I still wouldn't do it unless I needed a fix for the moment. Such as I am waiting for that one car, but need something "good' for now.
