The only other thing you should note is there is some early indication that BMW will program these cars so you cannot completely disable DSC in first and second gear.

How much better(smoother) is SMG in the M5 versus the SMG in the M3? Anyone have good experience with both?

I def think paddle shift cars are big right now. people who have a busy commute or those who cant drive 6MT, or those who just like it because they think 'oh im driving a car like an F1 race car' are really attracted to it. more involving that a straight auto but not as involving as a standard manual. i think Porsche's PDK system will be a HUGE hit when it comes out. I personally wont want one in any car except for a Cayenne but im a diehard manual guy. I think this will be the paddle shift that will be tops on the market.

SMG is going to be made obsolete pretty soon.

Dual clutch is where it's at.

So in a way, 6 speed manual all the way.

The 6 speed sucks in the E60's, nothing like the E39's. Go SMG.

6-speed all the way! I was at the track last weekend with my buddies E60 M5 and the SMG was horrible on the track. I was in S6 and it still took to long to engage the next gear.

Btw on the way back home from the track we hit 178mph. Such an amazing car cheers to BMW.

Lou see if you can drive a 550 6 speed back to back with the SMG M5. I'll bet you get the SMG. I prefer 6 speed like most but you can't run away from the electronics in the M5 no matter what you do, so might as well dive in and take her the way the engineers intended if you enjoy the car.
