Question E46 M3 Lost Brakes at the Track

Do you have any suggestions - warped the rotors during a Drivers Ed, yes the fluid was Dot 4, not a high temp - but is this common on this car? Is there a better rotor than stock? Do I need to upgrade the brake package - what is a good system?

Michael- did you remember to remove the plastic duct covers in front of the brakes? If so, a common error. The covers stop the airflow from cooling the rotors. Unfortunately, this is the way the car is delivered in NA.

Go for tarox!

Hey Michael996TT,

I would recommend tarox upgrade system for your car.
New discs and new pads.
You will notice a major improvement compared to your standard.
I have tarox on my cars and can post a couple of pics.

New tarox discs
New brakes pads (softer then bmws)
New brake lines
New brake liquid

cost me 800€ so whats that is dollars 1000 bucks?

Thanks for all the great suggestions - and for the feedback (Yes I did remove the plastic pieces up front, interesting BMW put those pieces in there, must be for some quirkee "world" spec). It looks like stock stuff does not cut it on the track - some replacement pieces are in order -I'll start getting on the web sights for some research and then upgrades !!!

Did you have race pads in there? If not, are you sure you actually warped the rotors and didn't just melt the stock pads all over them?

fwiw, I used to track my M3's quite a bit, and never needed anything more than a set of pagid orange pads, stainless lines and motul 600 fluid.
as gowide alluded, warping rotors is VERY hard to do. most likely it's pad deposits on the rotors which can be cleaned by driving the car for a few hours with an abrasive pad like hawk blue.
