Winter Driving

I'm curious if anyone drives their 987 in the winter? How well does it perform?

I drive my 986 in the winter. I assume it's essentailly the same. If there is any chance at all of freezing rain or snow in your area, snow tires are a must. Without them, you'll go nowhere. With them (and traction control/PSM), the car is very confident in the snow and is actually really fun to drive.

Just put my snow tires back on a few days ago.

What tires and size did you use? I'm thinking about testing out my 987 in the snow, always wanted to do it....my Audi isn't coming in until mid Jan....

The sizes will be different for a 986 vs. 987. However, go with the smallest tires you can get. Wider is not better in the snow.

For the base 986, you can do 16" wheels/tires, 17" for the S to clear the larger brakes. I think 17" is the smallest standard wheel on the 987? If so, then get snow tires in the same size as offered for the stock 17" wheels. Note that this assumes that you already have 17" wheels, or will get a separate set to mount your snow tires.

If you don't have a separate set of wheels, just get snows in the same size as your regular tires and swap them onto your wheels.

The tire selector on TireRack.com is a great help with this.

I have mine garaged since the last week of November. I do it just for the salt that they abundantly throw on the streets here.

mine has done great so far! had to take of the 19's and put the oem stock 17's on. seems to do just fine. for that matter our 996 has done okay too!

i bought some snow tires, but have not used them yet. the oems seem to be going fine. but then again, the snow was only at 4 inches. =)

I have only seen 1 Cayman so far this winter, no Boxsters or any more Caymans driving around. Just some Carreras every once in awhile.

I had to travel from my home in PA to Montreal last week and took my Boxster ('97, 2.5 w/ 17" Blizzaks). It's been doing great in the sleet / snow we've had up here in Montreal. My car has traction control. I'm most impressed about the heat and defrost compared to my 911SC. Heated seats are a big plus too.
