If your car was built prior to March 2005 you CANNOT play MP3's on the PCM. This was discussed at another forum. See this link for background.

I put mp3 files all in the root folder. Itunes sometimes farts with files, that's the only thing I can think of that might have damaged the CD. I burned it as a data CD on my Windows machine. The car just said "not an audio cd" and didn't do anything with it.

I'll see if I can track down the build date on my p-car. The chances of a 2006 being built before April 2005 are probably pretty slim I would think. I'll ask for a PCM update next time I'm in the stealership for something.

So has anyone confirmed whether the regular CD24 (non-nav) head unit will play MP3 CDs? Or is it only the PCM/Nav unit that will?

 

Only the PCM/Nav can play mp3's. The CD24 cannot.

 

i think starting with 07's and up, the cdc24 plays cd mp3s. i was just about to order an 08 987s and i brought an mp3 cd to test it. i told the salesperson that there are a lot of complaints that the factory cdc24 doesn't play mp3 cd's and that only pcm's can play them. so we tested it, there was a new 07 987 in the showroom without pcm, we popped the cd in and it works

 

I'll try again, since the 08 Cayman is parked right next to my 06 Carrera S in the garage. I'll make sure mp3 cd plays in both cars and re-validate.

 

Just tried it now. PCM plays mp3's. O8 Cayman CD24 does not.
