Have a great DD - Need a weekend fun/track car...

Hey guys,

I have been seriously considering a new Cayman or Cayman S in the next year or so when I move out to AZ for good. I would of course take Euro Delivery so it might actually be a year and a half before I can take the time off to do it, but I believe it would be worth every penny.

I already have a great daily driver - a new 08 VW Rabbit 5spd blk/blk - and I want a track/fun car for weekends/days off.

My top picks are:

New Cayman or Cayman S
E46 M3 Competition Pack
Perhaps a new M3? But a bit pricey
Lotus Elise/Exige - Kinda small and funny and no sick exhaust.... (Big deal for me)

Any thoughts?

I'll say Cayman S or Exige S.

I had also considered a 996 C2 or C2S - perhaps even an 01/02 996TT but am worried about how old it is, and the maintenance costs of one, as it IS still a $100k+ car.

For dedicated track use, nothings beats an Exige S...

But for DD/Weekend Car definitely the Cayman S.

The Exige S looks great and I have heard it handles brilliantly, but does it sound as good?

And for a weekend cruiser - NOT just a sole track car?

Well obviously I chose the Cayman. I've owned two M-cars and I just got bored with them after a short while. They're great, but they didn't excite me after a while. The Lotus is strictly a weekend car, you'd puke driving it to work every day. The great thing about Porsches is they perform as well as any sports car on the planet but they're actually designed to be cars. The horn and wipers will always work and they will never overheat. My Cayman is actually a really nice place to do long trips even, and it rips on the track. Plus they're built so well you can drive the **** out of them and still have a car good for 200k miles.

The M-guys will point to the back seat and modability, and the Lotus guys will point to track prowess, but the decision obviously lies is your own priorities. I came back after a 10-year absence

Good enough for me.

I plan to drive the car from AZ to Cali or Vegas once in awhile. Or perhaps even cross-country. Not a DD for now, but someday it might be. I don't plan on making it strictly a track car.

Had to entertain some other ideas besides the most obvious..

Cayman S or Lotus would be fun. You can get some decent exhaust for the lotus, check youtube

What about the standard Cayman with PASM? An S with sports seats and PASM is up there on pricing, getting close to E92 M3 pricing (well-equipped)...
