Boxster Widebody Project. Photos.
Color sanding today. whew! This car is big... you wouldn't think so. I've always thought of the Boxster's as a small car. Not so. MUCH larger than an older 911. Did you know from center of rim to center of rim is a longer wheelbase than a 996? Longer car.
I have been wanting to do a conversion like this to my 2000 986 for a long time and have not had any luck or know how? The closest I have visioned was to take an original or aftermarket GT2 wing and have it custom fit on my rear deck lid. However, the original trunk is much flatter than the 996's. In these pictures, the rear deck lid looks different than the factory one? How do I copy your GT2 rear spoiler/wing set up and what parts are they exaclty?
Another exotic GT look rear spoiler/wing idea I had was to maybe take a original 996 Twin-Turbo Factory setup and custom fitting it to my Boxster so that the original moving wing works and adds that GT look to it. I was basically visioning that, maybe, I can take advantage of the fact that the Boxster and 996 both use the electronic sensor’ed rear wings and see if I can replace and modify the 996 rear spoiler/wing system to replace my Boxster's moving rods/cylinders with the 996's factory system and then the 996 TT wing would come down and sit on the car while driving on slow speeds and come up on the freeway, unless I wanted the wing to sit up the entire time.
For a rear bumper, I have always wanted to go with the Gemballa bumper with the spaced out exhaust system, FVD also sells a similar body kit if not the same one. Then I recently seen the GT3 rear bumper available for the Boxsters and fell in love with it. However, it would look best with the GT2 spoiler like in these pictures. The Boxster looks amazing with this setup and would be a serous eye catcher once completed. Of course, the engine needs to "rumble" a little so that it all flows together by looking like a GT and sounding like one.
Adding a sport exhaust system on a 986 is a really intricate subject. I have been researching and spoke to almost every Porsche super tuner, race team and aftermarket company in California and learned that there is truly only a very few ways to go with a sport exhaust system for the 986 Boxsters; that performs, lasts, sounds good and ensures quality, not just sound and looks. All other aftermarket parts are actually a waist of money, damages your car in the long run and typically cause loss of power and/or torque just to get a better race sound. They all just sell you on the fact that its mandrel bent stainless steel, etc. Almost all of the after market sport exhaust retailers sell exhaust systems that are stainless steel, same gauge and with mandrel bend pipes (lol)! Most of the aftermarket companies sell either original sport exhaust system parts from Germany and put their names on it while other companies sell the cheap systems that look and sound good but made in China. Some sell half and half, higher quality sport cats from Germany and cheaply made headers and exhaust from China!
B&B, they went too big on the pipes which caused a loss of torque but sound great. B&B doesn’t offer cats and no one I know that used their 911, 986 or 996 systems were happy. Companies like Borla and Mile Miglia only offer exhaust replacements, they don’t offer the entire system because they are mass automobile manufacturer, not Porsche specific like Ruff. Now, let’s talk about FabSpeed (lol), German imported high quality cats, and the other parts….hhmmm, looks and sounds great? Does FabSpeed carry all German parts, do they work on 996 and 911 technologies as well, and do they have their own race team and the long term Porsche technology and mechanics expertise like Ruff and Gemballa do?
Exhaust conclusion; either order a premade system from a well known Porsche super-tuners and manufacturers like Gemballa, Ruff, etc or have one custom built from a Porsche Racing Fabricator you can trust like Scargo Racing in San Francisco. I am deciding to remove the Mile Miglia exhaust that was already on my car and add an entire Dansk sport system from headers, sport cats to exhaust. The reason is that I learned that Dansk are original equipment suppliers to Porsche and they manufacture all the parts I want, not just a header, or cat and/or exhaust separately. Most companies only offer one part or the other. Or I might just have Rob at Scargo Racing build me a system but it would cost twice as much since it would actually be hand-made just for my car at their shop and fine tuned before I left their lot. By going with all around quality system, I will avoid any low emissions reading and get the “check engine” light come on.
Update: The car is 99% done. Just going to finish it off then take some photos, maybe make a video etc... I've been absolutely slammed with other work & put the project on hold for a bit. The 2nd car (Ferrari yellow) was painted yesterday. Same exact looking car... but the nice looking Ferrari Giallo. I'm going to push to get both done ASAP. Hopefully pearl orange car done next week. What a project! LOTS OF HOURS. I see why Gemballa & companies like those charge what they charge. I think 1/2 of the cost of those cars must be the ability to continue to trudge through the details... & somehow find the patience to not finish the car too early... thereby ending up with a car that looks like a "kit car" when it's finished.
The car does get people to freak-out when they see it though... which was the mission. With the top down, it's absolutely impossible to believe it's a Boxster. And I saw it's transformation! Hopefully photos will do it justice.

That's awesome, I can't wait to see the final results. I have been looking into a GTR rear end for my car, and had no luck until your pictures gave me hope and then yesterday I came across two companies that actually ofer a real GT3 rea end setup and a GT2 wing, etc. The GT3 rea end was a widebody set up which I wish I would have learned about sooner becuase my boster is getting Type-Two side skirts added as we speak, bught from Neil at NR Accessories. The GT3 rea end is extremely noce with a 997 sideair inlets! I was upset since I could of have a more exotic rear end look with updated air-inlets but for now I will just deal with what I have for now. I want to buy the GT3 rear bumper from FVD, and instead of the Zein Wing from South Africa, I found the CSR Automotive - Porsche Breitbau 986/987 conversion Wide Body from Germany Body and GT2 wing set up. OMG! This was look just as exotic as my Lambo if properly down right. Like you said, once you are finishe
My front bumper is updates to the GT2 urethane bumper, silver hood and dash crest, deep dish blasck mesh rims with 4" rear rim dish, clear side markers and upgraded headlights and tail lights,a dn upgraded top with a glass window instead of the tradtional plastic.
Any suggestions on side air-inlets? The main thing I dislike about the car is the read end, Even though I have added nice side panels, front bumper and hopefully a GT3 rear winf and Bumper, my next challenge is to do some exotic to the side air-inlet with the factory side panles.. Any suggestions?
Otherwise, the rest of the car will look really nice and updated, ust not as exotic a the new 997 widebody conversion that looks ultimately the best in my opinion.
Exhaust pressure issues.
I started to get "putting" whenever I let off the gas while driving, more so the hotter the weathe and car gets. I took it toi Porsche and they just wanted to replace the Manifold and cats. They stated that they really do not know what side the noicse is coming from since its a center exhasut system and the noise can't be reduplicated while at idle and on the jack? My experience is that the headers/manifolds warp through time and either need to replaces or resurfaced. The cats, they need to be replaced for sure becuase I can hear movement inside when driving. The exhaust wa laready on the vcar when I bought it, its a Mile Miglia, sounds great.
My thoughts, replace the entire exhasut system with either a Dansk sport exhasut system since they are Factory exhasut usppliers or a SpeedArt system which I don't know much about, but both companies are higher qualty than the companies here in the US. I would like to add new sport system headers, cats and rear muffler. I have been recomdended to watch out with which manufactures to use and go with since many company use Chinese parts and mix them with german imprted parts, and becuae some manufacytores make large tubing which gives a deep sound but loss of torque which sucks becuase these parts are expebnsive and a headche to keep switching out.
BTW: Feel free to wtrite me directly at my personal email address. I can give it to you in your private inbox. Keep in touch and good luck with everything!
