What car do you have? I know in the Cayman S the primary cats are built into the headers and the secondary cats are built into the exhaust.

Cayman S. DO you have pictures of the "secondary" cats? and do these have anything to do with emissions if the primary cats are intact? Last question, do the aftermarket exhausts/muffler systems (cargraphic) come with secondary cats?

The secondary cats are built into the stock muffler system. I assume thats why we gain pretty good power from exhaust upgrade. Most aftermarket systems don't have the secondary cats in them, and as far as emissions go putting on an aftermarket exhaust won't set off a cel.

ok, thank you very much. Will a car that has an aftermarket muffler (with the stock headers and cats in place) pass an emissions inspection?

I don't know about passing emissions as I live in MS and we don't really have testing here.

calteg is infamous around these parts
Passing emissions depends on what your state test consists of.
In CA, it's a visual inspection (which you will fail without secondary cats) and a sniffer test.
Your boxster may or mat not pass the sniffer but will definitely fail a visual.

In the state of Az all obd 2 (95+) cars just get a scanner hooked up to them and then if the car doesn't have a cel than you pass. I the car is an obd 1 (94-) car then it will get ran on a dyno and the exhaust will get analized by a ega (exhaust gas analizer). To make sure the cel doesnt come on due to the set up with the cats look at where the o2 sessors are located? are they even on the secondary cat? You should have sensors for before cat and after cat, the after will detect catilist efficiency. If there are no sensors on the secondary cats then you should not have any check engine lights that come on when you change the exhaust even if it was just straight piped.
