Today my 2006 Cayman S 6 speed transmission cable snap ; ;

My Cayman S transmission cable snapped today. This is second time it happen. The first time it happen last year 2 to 3 days after I took my car to yearly service. And this year it happen again. The funny thing is it snapped about 3 days after i took my car to maintenance. So I am wondering is this situation happen to any other Cayman S users? Is this happen a lot? Is it normal? What factor could cause this to happen? In addition, I had overrev my Cayman last year ,but could the overrev engine cause the transmission cable to snap? Thank you in advance for everyone comment and sorry for my poor english.

I've seen these cables snap on all sports cars (porsche that is) and I have never really notice an obvious trend. Do you have a short shifter? Over reving or Internal tranny issues shouldn't affect this. Linkage on the tranny maybe, or mis-adjusted shifter possibly. Do you drive it in the winter? Maybe just plan old bad luck.

Nope I dont have a short shifter. Yup I do drive in the winter but not as much as in the summer. I think i really do have a bad luck this year lol. Today I picked up my Cayman S at the dealer. I drove my car less than 30 km and it happened again. The cable snapped once again. I wanted to reverse my car ,but i haven't put the gear into reverse yet. I just pushed the gear to the left then it snap. However, this time I can shift the gear from 1 to 6 put i can't shift my gear to reverse. What a pain I guess I got to get rid of this car before the warranty run out lol.

I got my car back yesterday. Dealer said this time the cable didn't break but the issue occur by some part of the gear lever broke. Today I drove my car over 100 km and the car work fine. I hope that it not gona happen again. Actually due to this transmission cable issue it makes my car even more excited. Every shift of the gear make me feel so excited in the same time thinking whether the cable gona break again or not.

This just happened to me last night. I have an SSK. I revved up to 8k on first gear then boom! What a hassle. It's an 06 and has 20k. How much am I looking to spend on repairs?

Broken shift cable

I just also broke the shift cable on my wife's 06 Cayman S . Car has 78000 km.
I managed to limp home in 2nd gear (where it was stuck luckily) , my wife then said that she was having problems shifting for a few days before, so it must have been on it's way out.

Anyway I've seen quite a few shift cable breaks on the Rennlist and Planet 9 forums , but not so many on this forum. The pic is off a planet 9 post, but my cable failure looks exactly the same.

Anyway, I'm busy replacing it, Porsche Centre Jo'burg has quoted R6056 (about $550 ) for a replacement cable.

Is this a common problem on these cars ?

I've had the cable repaired at an industrial cable manufacturer , they've used the original ends and plastic tubing , but replaced the metal cable inside. Cost R550 (about $50).
We'll see how long it lasts.

you might consider the numeric racing shift cables in the future. seems this is not an uncommon problem...

Agree on the numeric. I have a 2009 and when April or end of March rolls around when the salt clears, I'm going to proactively swap it out.
