stuck gear lock?

anyone ever have this problem? my friend has a 99 boxster, automatic, that when the car is started and you have to step on the brake to engage the gearbox and put the car into gear, nothing happens. she can't get into ANY gear. then after a considerable amount of time, the transmission engages and she's able to drive. any idea?

Thanks, but there is no CEL and why would a CEL code be thrown for a transmission issue? I'm fair certain it has to do with the automatic clutch...I just don't know what specifically it is.

Or it may be a problem with the interlock switch on top of the shifter.
If it's not working right, it won't let you shift out of park.

Happy Boxstering,
