Limited slip differanial

It is not clear to me when we need a LSD and if it can prevent driveline damage.
Do I need a LSD to do a few track days a year?
Does a LSD make enough differance that you can notice it in the seat of the pants? Or just at the car's limits?

FYI: There is a very long thread over at Planet-9 that goes over LSD's on the 987 platform:

My best guess is it is hardened to gain stiffness so it won't twist out of shape when under load.
It's really an oversimplification to say that it just contains everything. When the LSD locks, 100% of the torque load is transfered through the body of the LSD. When it locks, the inner gears stop spinning and everything is dependent on the strength of the housing. If you dig back 4 or 5 years into the archives over on Rennlist you'll find pictures and stories of Cup Car and GT3 LSD housings fracturing right at the root of the cap, breaking the thing right in half. They were literally spinning the thing apart with the rotational twisting force. It was this that led to Porsche releasing a billet LSD housing for all Cup Cars starting in 2008. And the ones that were breaking were forged heat treated housings.

I wouldn't use a dealer to install parts like these. These days all but the oldest dealerships around the country don't have a guy who knows how to set ring gear backlash and bearing preload. Everything but the differential is a dealer only item. So bearings, seals and shims need to come from the dealer. But most independent Porsche mechanics that have the skillset to install one of these has their own dealer account.

If you buy one of our differentials, we're a wholesale business. We ask you to purchase the parts through the independent who is doing the installation (there are a limited number of dealers who can also do this and what you should do is ask your dealership if that's who you prefer to do the work). Dealer or independent, nobody in this business likes when you show up with your own parts and ask for install, and we, as a manufacturer try to respect and support that position.

You have to have a Porsche group in Dallas, lol. Hook up with them.

Unfortunately, I don't have a good reference in Dallas or I would have already made it. I know good people in Austin, San Antonio, and Houston, but not Dallas.

After, what, 40some days of intense heat you reach a point where you have to still make a living.
Tough situation y'all have.

Honestly, a LSD is very useful for getting power to the ground early during corner exit in a race car. For someone vying for a National Championship it means the difference between winning or losing. Do you need it for a few DE track days/year? Nope. Go out and enjoy your car. After you have gone through 6 sets of track tires you will know if you need LSD.

Did you email or call them? I sometimes miss customer emails when they dump into my spam folder. Either way, you're not being a pest if you call them a second time after waiting a week. We're all human and sometime overlook a callback without meaning to.

Technically, you are probably right, but I do 1-2 DE's a year in my Cayman S and installed a TBD (tried to do a Guard LSD but they werent making them yet at the time!). For me, I couldn't stand the inside wheel spinning at all, even on the street. I grew up in shifter karts and race cars with LSD's and hated the feel of the open diff, track or street. It might not have been "necessary" but it was one of the best mods I have done because I can finally get the power down no matter where I am driving the car.
