I would sell the car if
1) you really can't sleep at night because your afraid the engine will blow up.
2) you really can't drive a manual car and tend to rev over the redline frequently.
3) you plan to track the car frequently and disregard maintenance.

Otherwise, have fun and don't worry so much.

There are significantly, exponentially more cars running than cars that had IMS failure. If you're really concerned though (& nothing is wrong with that), you can look into a product call IMS Guardian. Pretty interesting gadget and I'm surprise no thought of it until now. Look it up. I posted a link here or on the 996 forum that our PCA Tech editor did a review on. @ $400, it's a relatively cheap insurance. Others may suggest oil analysis.. but unless you send a sample out every 500 miles... it's not very useful.
Here is the PCA newsletter - look at the tech editor section:

I think most of the people that get disappointed with any nice car is that they just don't drive them enough. So, with the top $ paid for the car and then add on a little expensive problem, and they have only used the car minimally = frustration/fear.

Just drive the darn thing like everyone else says to!

About to hit 70,000 miles on mine. Only issue was a crack in the coil packs and I've tracked my car once and drive it pretty hard. No one likes to spend money to fix anything but you can't always avoid it. If it bothers you that much to the point that you can't enjoy the car, then it's not the car for you! Otherwise enjoy your 987 and drive it like it's suppose to be driven.

One thing I've noticed is people buying cars that they can afford but can't afford to take care of. Before you even buy the car, you should be aware of all of the maintenance and issues. If you can't deal with all of that happening and/or afford to take care of it, then don't get the car

Lots of people blow this out of proportion, while it may happen - it likely won't. Give yourself peace of mind by finding a reputable shop to do your oil changes. A good shop will cut your filter and analyze at every oil change - a pending IMS failure will likely show up in advance via particles in your oil filter. Or if you do your oil changes yourself, send your oil off for an analysis and build your baseline / trend. You don't want to lose sleep - arm yourself with knowledge...the small price will put you at ease.

I've read a lot about the oiling issues coming forward when R compound (or slicks) tires are used, did you do any mods to address the oil starvation problem before/during your 40 track days?
tks

Just bought my 08 CS in Feb of this year. Have put a couple thousand miles on it. Haven't had any issues. I just changed the spark plugs as well as the oil. If you can DIY it will definitely save you money if you are worried about paying shop fees.

Overall I'm having a great time with the car. I have done some minor things such as Eibach lowering springs (pain in the butt to install), drop in filter, AP exhaust, and custom dyno tune. Love the car every minute I drive it!
