There was an unusual take-off the other night at the French Valley airport.
It wasn’t a plane that went airborne – but a Porsche.
The flight was brief.
About 11 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, a tan 2012 Porsche Cayman sped north up the runway at the airport off Winchester Road, reaching speeds well over 100 mph, said Officer Nathan Baer, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.
The sports car did not stop at the end of the runway.
It launched off an embankment, grazed the top of the metal fence around the airport and landed in the eastbound lane of Auld Road, Baer said. The car continued across Auld Road and came to rest in a field.
Baer said there were several witnesses, including people at the Southwest Detention Center up the road. A pilot who was coming in for a landing at the airport also saw the crash, Baer said.
When officers arrived, the driver was gone and the keys were still in the car. The car is registered out of Temecula and the owner is a pilot, Baer said.
Officers spoke with the wife of the owner, who said she didn’t know where her husband was. The car had not been reported stolen.
Investigators could not locate the owner after the collision and, as of Wednesday, he had not contacted the CHP, Baer said.
“We don’t know his side of the story,” Baer said.
It was unclear whether the driver was injured in the crash. Baer described the damage to the Porsche as moderate.

I hope the airport has video cameras cause I would like to see it. Only moderate damage, must of landed pretty clean!
