Not wrong. It's not about the money; it's about the looks - I'm not really a fan of the bigger tires. Begins to feel less classic and more bling bling pimped, which doesn't resonate with me.

Can you post what those options were? I'd love to see how they end up being $4,000 more seeing as the car is only a $3,000 difference.

i realize you are talking about caymans!
I'm juist surprised to see the performance numbers better for the boxster than the cayman! And the cayman is more!

Just my 2 pennies!
Where did you see the new cayman is heavier and slower than the boxster?

I put a deposit down and ordered my Cayman S two weeks ago. I have a March build slot and my dealer said I should have it before April 10th. I also got a 5k discount off msrp.

Hey Hawc, I am very curious why you canceled at the last minute and went with the 991 instead. This is my first Porsche purchase and I spent over one year debating back and forth between these two cars. Read everything I could and test drove a 997 GTS and 981 Boxster and came to the conclusion that the 981 is more fun to drive and handles better than the 991. I have two other cars so I didn't need the back seats. What was your deciding factor in choosing the 991 over the new Cayman?

Hey H MAN, first off, let me say a big congratulations! I'm excited for you. I think you're gonna love it.

I haven't actually ordered a 991 yet. I'm still on the fence between the 981 and the 991.

I've now missed the March build date (in Canada) so if I do place an order I won't be part of the April launch delivery anymore.

I love absolutely everything about the new Cayman except the looks. I saw it in person at the LA Auto Show and it's just not my idea of what a Porsche should look like. It's purely subjective, but I think a Porsche should have smooth, flowing, curvy lines. I don't like the flattened off fenders and sharp creases in the metal. It also sits very upright and it just isn't a sexy car for me anymore, it's a butchy car. That's just me though. I know a lot of people don't like the look of my 987 and think the new Boxster/Cayman is a huge improvement.

I'm only looking at the 991 because of the fact it's gorgeous. I can't afford it. It's not as good value. And the engine is in the wrong place.

So I honestly don't know what to do anymore. I guess I'll just hang on to mine a little while longer while I figure stuff out. I don't want to go 997.2 or 987.2 because I want a new feeling car inside, not the same design I've been in since 2007.

Thank you Hawc. I am very excited. This will be my very first Porsche and I've wanted one for a long time. (I'm in my 40's) I always thought of course it would be a 911 but last year I test drove a 997.2 GTS and then a 981 and the handling really was dramatically different. I liked the power better in the GTS, it really put you back in your seat. But on curves and such the 981 felt so much better. I have not driven a 991 but I'm sure it's great.

My 981 build before discount was 89k. I had to make a choice of either a stripped down base 991 or a loaded up CaymanS 981. I happen to like all those toys, PDK, PSE, etc. I have not seen the Cayman in person like you have but from pictures I think it actually looks very similar to the 911, much more so than the last generation. In fact, on Porsches web site when you go to the configurator and it shows all the models in white from the side, the 991 and the 981 look almost identical. I saw a post on here weeks ago where someone photo shopped the 991 tail lights and put them on the back of the new Cayman. Voilà, the back end all of sudden looked fabulous.

Anyway Hawc, let us know what you decide. It is an important decision. It is very expensive and you will have the car for years so you have to make the right decision. If you're like me and trying to stay under 90k, then it really is a no brainier to choose the Cayman S over the base 991. I got just about every possible option I could have wanted. I priced a 991S the way I wanted it and it came to 125k lol.

Hey HAWC and HMAN - I am in exactly the same position..I am trying to make myself love the Cayman S (haven't it seen it person)..I like everything else except the rear..However the 991 is gorgeous in and out..the only issue is $$$. Even worse I like the 991 'S' which is is even more $$$ so I am stuck what to do myself As HMAN says it will be a car I'll be (planning) keeping for a long time so I want to get it once..if someone is keeping it long term I dont really care about depreciation..a long term car should be one owner only BC you have no idea how the someone else has abused it...I havent driven either..I dont want to settle for Caymen S and then think "Damn I should have spent the extra $$$ and gone for the 991!!" HOWEVER I dont want to spend another $30K if I dont need too, especially BC as HMAN says the engine in the center of car makes for better handling..

Ironically I really like the Boxster S (especially from the website Silver and Red) but that will mess up my hair - I guess I could always shave it off..

HMAN - I saw that pic too and YES it made the Cayman look so nice!!

Arghhh confused!!!

I'm not sure where your getting your info but the Cayman is definitely faster than Boxster.

it will be in the straight line and for sure at the track.

+1 on the sports chrono with pdk. A must get, otherwise your sport driving in pdk will be none existent or frustrating if you try in auto mode.
