Hunting at idle

Hi guys,

Was wondering if someone can help out with this issue please. My Boxster 2.7 2000, started hunting at idle just today coming to work. Last work I have done was on the airbag frame to stop horn honking at breaking or when I drive over rough roads or speed bumps. I had to disconnect battery for safety but when connected it again and started car it was all good.

I am suspecting water ingress on the left hand side, where there's that black box sitting. We had some heavy rain the night before and behind the pax seat is all wet so I believe some water might have made it to the box.

Could that affect the idle in anyway. To be honest, I don't have a clue what's in it. I'm not naive at all about cars or engineering, but very new to my beloved boxster.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and cheers.

A hunting idle along with a vague/mild hesitation from my 02 Boxster's 2.7l engine were the first signs of a failing AOS. This happened at around 80K miles.

The water in the cabin probably doesn't have anything to do the symptoms, but you want to find the way the water is getting in and put a stop to it. And dry out the moisture for under the passenger seat is the car's security controller.

A common source of water in the cabin is overflowing water drains under the front trunk lid. There are 3 under the panels on either side of the battery box. These can collect trash and this blocks the drain pipe and water overflows the basin and that's that. Treat those basins and drains with care. If you break one it can allow water to still get into the cabin even if the basin does not overflow.

While you are thinking about water drains be sure the ones on either side of the rear of the top are clear too.

Hi Macster,

Thanks for that reply.

I did actually clean the rear drains the day before it rained, two days ago. I also noticed though that the pan, which looks like it's made of some sort of rubber or polystyrene foam, has got like a 2" tear close to the drain hole. So that might be the leak source?

As for the AOS, it might be it also, since the car is at around the 80K miles too. A coincidence? I don't believe in them :-). I guess that would be a shop's visit? How much lighter would your pocket be after that fix you reckon?

Thanks and cheers mate.

I second that. My AOS also had the same symptoms before it went out. The AOS was less than $100 and took me about 4 hrs to complete.

Hi Shifty and thanks. Can you please tell me where you bought the AOS from, if on-line? Also, I assume you did it yourself, so that would be good :-)

Thanks and cheers.

PS. Also I need to add some more info about the hunting. I noticed it only happens when the engine is warmed up (87deg C). Could it be as a friend suggested that it might be the oxygen sensors in the exhaust? That's what I think he said :-).

I got mine at Suncoast Porsche. I just called them and placed my order. And yes I did it my self with a step by step process that you can find on planet9. Do a search on the AOS and make sure that it actually is the AOS that's failing and not something else.
Good luck.
