How Long Does An Order Really Take?

Hello,

I'm John, new this forum, but have kicked around on The Car Lounge for a bout 15 years. I'm hoping you guys can clear something up for me that the dealer sounded kind of non-committal about, order/build times.

Based on the options I want on the car, it appears to me that buying a new one is not only easier but also is not really going to cost much (if any) more than a one year old car, the only disadvantage being missing out on the extra two years of warranty CPO would provide.

So, the dealer told me "around three months" when I asked them how long I should expect to wait for delivery, but they didn't sound dead sure on it. I know there are many variables here, but it was vague enough that I figure someone can provide clarification.

Also, anyone have a clue how much negotiation room there is on a new one? I'm not financing, will just write a check for the car.

Thank you

3 months is a good standard.
-5% +/- for a GTS
probably -5% to -10% on a base or S
(if on the lot, better discount)
Cash or credit doesn't matter.

I'll chime in here since I've gone through 2 different custom order in the past. While it's true that a custom ordered car can take about 3 months to reach the dealership. The important question you need to ask your salesperson is what kind of allocation does his/her dealership have for the month. Maybe part of the reason why he/she sounded vague is because they don't currently have anymore allocations for the car you're trying to order.

As for the discount, you can expect anywhere between 3.5%-6.5% (anything higher than 6.5%, consider yourself lucky). This also depends on whether you're getting a Base/S or GTS. The discount % will be lower on the GTS.

Once the deposit is put down, ask your salesperson to give you a build schedule. That table will let you know all the important dates. (build lock date, entry into bodyshop, exit bodyshop, etc.) The dates are usually padded by about 2 weeks. Most of the time, you'll end up getting the car earlier than the projected date.

Just ordered my second 981 Cayman Base optioned exactly how I want it. My dealer had two different allocations early in the 2016 cycle. I picked the earlier of the two. I ordered 5/30.....mid June cutoff on any changes, July build, ship in August with a targeted arrival in port on August 28th and at the dealership around September 11th. 3+ months. 5% off. Configuration is as follows:
. Cayman Base
. Mahogany Metallic
. Luxor
. 14 Way Seats with Memory
. PDLS
. CDR+
. PDK
. X73 Sport Suspension
. SportDesign Steering Wheel
. Sport Tailpipes

nice build! We just took delivery of our ordered Cayenne Diesel today, and I almost bought a Cayman S, which is why I have been lurking here. Instead I am taking delivery of a 2012 911S tomorrow! I love the Cayman, but the 911 was a great deal and already had the depreciation hit.
