used boxster S thoughts?
So something crossed my mind the other day. I'm in love with my Dad's 2002 C4S, and I was thinking about trading my X5 4.4 Sport for a Boxster S as I really do miss having a little sports car to run about it. Granted, I love my X5 as a "best of all worlds" kind of car ... but ... yeah.
Anyway, my X5 with 87K miles and near-perfect condition is unfortunately worth only $20K or so.
Basically, I'm wondering what I'd have to sacrifice in a Boxster S if I wanted to find one for under $30K?
Kinda like this one, here: http://www.quicksalesauto.com/2001boxsters.html
Thanks!
P.S. My other reasons for considering this are because the X5's warranty expires in October or 100K miles, whichever comes first. And as we all know, Porsche reliability >> BMW reliability.
That said, I'd happily take a 911 variant of some sort, but then (a) I'd love to have a convertible and (b) I don't imagine finding a newish 911 (no older than 2000) convertible for under $30K. Thoughts?

If you dont have a family like me
or dont ski 10 times a year.. you shold be good with the BoxsterS, what you would miss is comfort ride and space. Other than that , since youre a young guy
you should be good.. Me I had to buy a quattro to complete my needs and wants,LOL
Good luck that's a nice looking boxster...

yeah, i have to admit, i AM VERY concerned about the lack of ANY real useable storage space.
honestly, as long as it can carry two bags of luggage, that's all i need though.

i bought a new boxster s in the summer of '03 and was pretty happy with the trunk spaces - more than i thought! however, i needed more power and sold it after only 8 mos. i remember the first test drive of a new 996 that i took and was amazed at the power difference between the two. that 996 lasted 18 mos then i needed more power so i got the 996tt
in summary, if you're used to the 996 power, i think even a boxster s will underwelm you

haha your "in summary" sentence just answered the question i was going to ask: so really, if i'm used to Dad's 996 C4S i won't be impressed with the Box-S? It's MUCH lighter weight and convertible top don't make up for its less power?
A Boxster S with the right goodies will be a blast. You have come to the right place where there are a few guys with a lot of experience with them. Do it, the convertible aspect is great, plus they are a great little auto X/track car when prepared correctly. Check out Alex911s's thread on his car and the suggestions made by some. Good luck! Post some pics up when you get it.

you're right, the C4S is a heavy car comparitively speaking. however, i remember my first test drive with the C4S as well and there was that extra punch that the boxster s did not have - that extra low end torque compared to the boxster s
don't get me wrong, the boxster s is a fun little car. the convertible aspect does add unnecessary weight IMHO but fun. IF you're not too concerned about the power difference, then go for it.
