SL 500 Or Cayman S
SL 500 Or Cayman S
Hi there, I'm Malaysian.. Im still confuse to decide which is better for me. I'm 26'th now. SL 500 04' late n Cayman S 06' is almost the same price in my town. I saw both in dealer, i like the SL 500 but im afraid when its comes to model change i cant afford the new model hehe. I am junior in Automotive, Please help. Thank you very much people
How do you plan to use it? Boulevard cruising? Pull chicks? Inspired driving? Track it every now and then? Yes to the first two = SL. Yes to the last two = Cayman.
I'd personally get the CaymanS, not only because this is the Cayman section of a Porsche board but because I think the SL is becoming a little dated and that the Cayman is the more fun car of the two.
The new SL is just around the corner so the 04 will probably depreciate like crazy. And with the Cayman you still have warranty left...

thk's bro, The SL 500 price is RM725.000 Black with Red, The Cayman S is RM 732.000 Red with beige. I'm plan to drive the car to work sometimes, n for weekend. House to office around 20km. I never buy a sport car, so i like convertible.
Why not get the Boxster S, new with 3.4L engine. It's a convertible too.
Between the two, I'd go w Cayman. SL500 is a dated engine and car is pretty slow as it's heavy. It's not a real sports car (if that matters to you).

Of course, you're asking on a Boxster/Cayman board
so you know my answer. One thing I underestimated when buying my Boxster is how well they age. Most other makes look quite dated after a model change. For better or worse, Porsche changes the model styles so gradually that even after a model change, the old ones still look good. Agree with the other comments, though. SL is the cruiser to me. I bought mine for the sport.

im really happy in this forum, n makes me more love american people who's like to share. In malaysia they dont have used Boxster S, people only buy a boxster. The MB dealer call me twice, porsche call me once. I saw SL this morning, the front is almost the same with CLK, the rear is so gud. Cayman is amazing in roads. Still wait the dealer to give me better price. Tq people
I have a 2003 sl 500, and...
I don't particularly like it compared to my BASE 987 Boxster, but in your case, I'd pick the sl because it appears you want a convertible and not necessarily a full sports car. SL is a good compromise between sports car and luxury car.
You'll be very comfortable and very safe in the SL.

I'd throw you an alternative..... Compare a SLK55AMG to the Cayman-S for price (about 68k USD). The SLK55AMG is a monster in a straight line, rides nice although does not nearly have the same road handling/feel as the Porsche.......but, you do get the availibity of a nice roadster.
If you're mostly doing open road driving (verus) twisty mountain/roads, the SLK would be great.......if you like more handling and roadfeel that you might want in the other type of roads, the Porsche hands-down.
(And I say this from testing both......many many times, over the last month)
Good luck...

SL is going to be more of a "sporty luxury car" where the Cayman is your Sports Car.
I had an 03 SL500 for a while my senior year; it now belongs to my brother. I really liked the car but of course the handeling won't begin to compare to the CS. With what you are looking for as far as just from home to work and being interested in a convertible, the SL sounds more suitable for you and like bavariamotorist said it is a good compromise between sports car and luxury car. If you were wanting something more along the lines of really enjoying the feel, driving the roads, hugging turns, etc. then the CS would be the car for you. So, even though overall, I'd have to say go for the Cayman S, it sounds like the SL is more what you are looking for.
Good Luck on the decision!
