Obliged to pay US state tax if importing to Canada??

Hi guys,

looking to import a used 2006-2007 997 c2s from the US. I understand the entire importing process BUT the part when you actually buy the car...

Do you have to pay the state tax when purchasing the vehicle from the US if the car will immediately be imported to Canada? Im looking to cut tax costs as Ill be taxed 6% duty + 13% gst/pst in quebec...let me know what you guys have done?!?

Thanks!!!
Dan

you shouldn't need to pay the state tax since you are an outside state buyer. Although there are some states that are different but make sure the seller check his things carfeully, if the dealing goes outside the state (like if you get the car shipped and wire transfer him the money) you should be fine.

Why don't you buy a 996 turbo instead, i have a nice one here already imported

+1, you shouldn't pay any state tax. Try contacting the state that the car is located. You may need to pay it and then claim it back.

Another way to do it would be to get a dealer/broker to bring it up for. A little bit of money for them doing all the dirty work.

you are not required to pay any sort of sales tax on cars that are for export outside the US

the tax is based on where the car will be registered. if you do not register the car in the state you bought it, you don't have to pay anything.

I had a friend pick up a Bimmer in San Diego. Since he was actually PICKING IT UP himself, he had to do it across the border (they chose Mexico) so that the wasn't charged tax (dealership). Maybe it's a California thing? Other than his instance (which I attribute to a dealership) though, I've never heard of it before. I guess maybe they think you're buying it and then will sell it again down there before you leave?? You know, spend $3,000 for airfare/hotel/food/drinks/other all so that you can make $1000 by saving the tax when you sell it to someone else down there .

But seriously, if you can show that you're exporting the car to Canada, there shouldn't be an issue. I suppose in a worst case scenario, you could pay it and claim it back??

Importing a vehicle to Canada from US: state tax

I have imported several vehicles for myself... and the short answer is that it depends on two things:
1) dealership or private sale
2) the state you are buying it from

Private sales seem not to have any state tax, so this is the easy choice.

Buying from a dealership may result in State Sales Tax if you want to drive the car off the lot. Several states (i.e. CA & OH to name a few) require you to pay the tax (California is 7.25%) OR ELSE ship it out of the state (at least to the state line) to avoid paying the sales tax.

(Some may not care and you may be able to ship it out of sight from the dealer -- like two blocks away -- but I had to ensure that there was a 'bill of lading' from the shipping company -- so the dealer was very careful.)

However other States such as Oregon and Nevada (so called NOMAD states) don't have Sales Tax at all whether buying private or from a dealer.

Hope this helps.
