Chew on this: Gumball rally driver out of race for speeding in Ontario
07/05/2010 9:01:00 PM
The Canadian Press
TORONTO - At least two drivers in the Gumball 3000 Rally ran afoul of the law while passing through Ontario.
The drivers, who are trying to get from London, England, to New York in seven days, spent a short time in Ontario under the watchful eye of police as they motored from the Quebec border and Niagara Falls, Ont.
The driver of a 2009 Dodge Charger from California was stopped along Highway 401 in the Marysville area for travelling at 140 kilometres an hour, given a ticket and cautioned about speeding.
About two hours later, along Highway 401 in the Brighton area, the same Charger was stopped again for going over 170 kilometres an hour in a 100 zone.
This time Ontario Provincial Police charged him with stunt driving, seized his licence for seven days and had his vehicle impounded.
And Niagara Regional Police say a driver from Sweden was ticketed in Niagara Falls.
Police say the driver of 2010 Porsche 911 GTRS arrived and began to perform unsafe manoeuvres in a parking lot close to a group of on-lookers.
The 43-year-old driver pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, was fined for his actions and has since left Canada to continue with the rally.
