2005 cayenne s engine problem atlanta warranty question

My wife has a 2005 cayenne s with just over 50K miles (mileage is out of warranty). Before warranty expired at 49K check engine light came on. We took it to local porsche dealer (will not name yet) and they could not find problem/reason for light. We told them to inspect everything because warranty was about to expire. They sent us on our way with no explanation.

Now at 50100 (funny timing) miles the engine sounds terrible and they cannot pinpoint the problem. No lights are on, but the car sounds terrible. They quoted 3 hours labor just for diagnostic service to look inside the engine. We have all records since new and the car has been babied.

Any suggestions on how to handle or what to expect? I feel a sour taste brewing in my mouth.

Possibilities are:

Broken fuel pumps
Bad gasoline
More oil than max allowed
Bad coils

You should explain how terrible the engine sounds and what kind of a sound, where it comes from etc.

had oil/filter changed at 49000 miles.

I thought it sounded like a loose belt. Service guy thought it was water pump until they lifted it on the rack.

At low revs it is has a loud clicking sound a few times a second in sync with revolutions.

Dealership called so I could authorize total engine breakdown. The 8th cylinder was faulty and very small specs of metal were in the engine. They said they have never seen this before in the V8. My question is if they have not seen this before, would they not know to look for it when the check engine light came on at 49K and they said nothing was wrong? Waiting to see if Porsche covers repair. Details to follow.

By the way, Jim Ellis Porsche was the dealership that went to bat for me. I have used them for 6 years on and off and the have always been solid. I drive a 03 C4S and they noticed during my last vist the cat converters were bad. Replaced them no charge. I have 79500K on the car, cat warranties expire at 80K. Them boys are alright by me.

I think you might be out of luck. Since the warranty is expired, they are under no obligation to repair anything. That is why it is always a good idea to buy extended warranty or to trade-in your car for a newer model.
