I recommend you get a different car than a Cayenne simply because of the maintenance. It's like having a baby, only cleaner. :-)

Do you have a 3rd party warranty? If so what does it cover? Thanks.

Yes I have a third party warranty that extends mine to 89000 miles and 3 years. It covers everything mechanical short of normal maintenance items. There is a $50.00 deductible for approved shops or $75.00 for other shops. I haven't used it yet but will be doing so shortly. I think it's worth it for the 3000 I paid for the warranty. (I bought the car with 53000 miles on it and factory warranty expired) I couldn't think of not having some sort of protection after having owned Volkswagens before.

These cars are very well built and last a long time, however with anything high-performance you can't just drive them into the ground. You have to maintain them to factory specs and that involves some out-of-pocket expenses that have to be taken into account for the life of the car.

Plastic pipes were used until the engine was redesigned for 08. When replaced, aluminum pipes are used. Also, reman engines are now coming with the aluminum pipes, as of several months ago. And as far as fuel mileage goes, the difference between V8 and V6, are pretty marginal, not to mention the vehicles ability to hold its own on the road when equipped with at least the S model. Its a large degree of how you drive not what you drive.

porschespeeddemon - oh i thought the aluminum pipes were used in late 05 and 06 models... if they weren't AL until 08, I guess i'll adjust my search but in all the other threads regarding these coolant pipes, people have said they were changed in late 05+

Thanks Demon.
I'm baffled as to why Porsche has not issued a campaign on this issue. It's a well known problem.
If it does happen to my Cayenne and they don't cover it (Even after my warranty expires) i'll sue them just out of priciple. I've spoken to two techs and they both confirmed it a common occurance.

Jeff, there is a bulletin on this issue, but just that-a bulletin which is not like a recall. The bulletin is just an information bulletin, telling dealers that there is an updated metal pipe available. Its a piece of plastic that fails over time. It will be purely up to the dealer's discretion as to whether or not they wish to cover it outside of the vehicle warranty. This is really no different than a coolant expansion tank on a 996/7. It is plastic, and over enough heat cycles it will fail, and once the vehicle warranty is up, it is no longer covered. One difference is that the tanks are still made out of plastic, and it will just be a maintenance item every XXX miles/heat cycles. The pipes are now made of aluminum, so this repair will only need to be done once. FWIW-I have seen several aftermarket warranty companies cover this item, and it is covered by CPO as well. Attempting to sue over a piece of plastic might be a can of worms you may or may not want to open with Porsche or your local dealer.

There were questions about this issue and older cayennes in general and I am sharing this information. I dont feel I am anything but relaxed. I think my above post was to the point without being obnoxious or aggressive. So relax.
