Best snow tire for a 2006 Cayenne Turbo S?
Best snow tire for a 2006 Cayenne Turbo S?
I see that I can choose between the Pirelli Scorpian Ice and Snow if I decide to change out the tires on the 20' Sport Techno's I have laying around. However, if I decide to get a set of 19's, I can fit the Blizzards.
Which would be better for this car? I will be exporting this truck to my home in Korea where we do get caught in blizzards and heavy snow. If I go outside the city, the street is unpaved also so I will be driving through a combination of mud/snow.
Any help would be appreciated.

Scorpions are better!!!
Tried both and prefer the mentioned.
Got the perfect setu. As discussed in out PM's but nit sure it 18 turbo wheels will fit
on the turbo s. I am thinking they will because
I was hesitant at frst bc I thought you had a 2009 turbo s which had bigger breaks than your 06.

Yes, 19" is the smallest one can go on a TurboS.
The 18's on my Turbo have been great for me. I use Pirelli 255/55-18 Ice & Snow non-studded. While I will stick with the 18's, next time I may go taller & narrower and maybe studded 235/60-18. I figure this will give me a half inch lift, a softer ride, will cut through slop better and save me a couple of bucks as the narrower size is cheaper. The compromise is that when the pavement is clear, it will be a little harder to put down all that horsepower & torque.
I don't know what widths your TurboS PCM is programmed for. I would look at the tire size options it offers and choose from that menu.
The philosphy has been either go wider with the idea of riding on top or go narrower with the idea of cutting through and getting more traction. The later seems to be winning over the test of time. Porsche recommends the narrower taller tire for offroad AT use. For unpaved roads a narrower tire might be better.
I happen to have three sets of OEM wheels/tires.
FYI: Snow & ice tires get eaten up in temperatures above 40 degrees F.
So, I have another set of 255/55-18 General Grabber AT2's for summer use which are brand new.
My OEM 20" set is superb but not so good on gravel and unpaved roads, not so good on the wet, or launching a boat; but for dry improved highways the Diamaris can't be beat. But they cost almost four times more to run. I like them so much I have a spare set of new 20's.
Get the right tire for the job. Our 20" SportTechno wheel is the best looking wheel on the Cayenne. I have 18" Turbo wheels and 18" Turbo II wheels.
I'd recommend you build an entire separate set of wheels/TPMS monitors and tires. Those Turbo II wheels in 19" look great! Just don't forget to get center wheel caps to complete your look.
I got my last set from Ernie's Porsche Alloys out of Florida. For OEM Porsche wheels Ernie can't be beat. Tell him Dr. Kent sent you. PM as you like for his e-mail address and phone number.
Ernie's color center wheel caps are the best hand painted one's I have out of my three sets. He'll get you those and everything to you at an excellent price.
While I love the TireRack, I prefer Porsche OEM wheels--which the TireRack doesn't have. I buy most of my other stuff from the TireRack. They know their stuff; they ship quickly.
Nobody gives much of a break in shipping to Alaska but Ernie & his wife bent over backwards to keep costs down.
If Ernie doesn't have the Porsche OEM wheels you want, I'd try Wheel Enhancement out of LA. They know their stuff, are excellent to work with; but a little pricey.
FYI: I have seen a vey good 22" snow tire out of Europe recently, so you might find a 20" snow & ice tire out there. I don't know of any and prefer smaller sizes for winter tires. But if you find an adequate or excellent 20" Snow & ice tire, a lot of people here would appreciate knowing about them.

Thanks for the replies! I have an extra set of OEM Sport Techno takeoffs because I am running the Techart rims right now. So I might setup the Sport Techno's with the snow tires and put them on inthe winter time.
Dr. Kent, awesome reply. I am going to build a whole set with TPMS right now...calling Damon as I type this.

Far better a dedicated set of snows. Saves $ and wear 'n tear on wheels. BTW, you can change them yourself but get a torque wrench. I read that one of the main causes of prematurely warped rotors is improperly torqued wheels.
I bought my torque wrench from TireRack. I also bought their PsiClops (Sp?) dual tire pressure gauge. While it is a bit short for the CT's back tires. One ends up under that back bumper. I wish the hoses were longer--so I could stand up while doing the rears.
Being able to set tire pressure in pairs in necessary for this beast and due to my compulsivity, getting the right pressure in all four drives me nuts!

If you are hauling a variety of loads and passengers, you'll want that pressure guage to change the rear tire pressure. I have only used mine once to release air but it looked like it would work with the Porsche pressurizing hose & compressor. If it doesn't, I'll just fill each with the Porsche air supply and then release the air on the front and rear pairs with the PsiClops.
BTW, TireRack has PsiClops at about half price. I got that with a single tire pressure guage and I'm glad I did. The PsyClops comes in a rather nice box but it is large and there are times I just want to check one tire.
The temperature variations [from -5 to +47 F!] have been messing with my tire pressures and I am lazy. If the Michellins were on right now, I'd be finessing that pressure to make them puppies last. Damned expensive but I love 'em.
As an aside my updated web site should be up very soon. I submitted the work order yesterday morning. http://drkentshow.com
