iPad as replacement for PCM!
#16
Aren't you worried about sound quality, as your only output on the ipad is the headphone jack..... ??
Also, not sure where you will be driving mostly, but out here on the east coast once you leave the city, at&t falls on its face with terrible service, can you imagine trying to use the navi with a bad or no signal......
Cool idea, maybe as a backup, but buy something like the Pioneer Z1 BT, which is an incredible model and can be had for less then 1k.....with some of the best sound quality and features on the market.....GPS based tracking, XM traffic NAV, with any imput you want, for IPad/IPOD...whatever.....

One thing to keep in mind here is that I have an 04 CTT with the crappy PCM 2.0 cd nav system now.
My should quality kinda sucks now unless I have a CD in the drive. Then of course I can't use the nav system with a cd in the drive.
My nav is something like 7 discs and they are all 6 years old at this point. My house is not even on my nav.
To update the nav CDs is abut $250 last time I looked.
Then to get an ipod into the unit with some sound quality is another $500+
While you can buy an after market head unit for around $1,000. To install it correctly is going to cost a minimum of another $700 for a MOST-HUR or all new speakers and amps.
None of this is including labor.
Not saying the ipad idea is any more cost effective to do it right, just saying there is really no "cheap" solution. Th ipad was just another idea.
You can pull the audio from the dock connector fwiw.

Cole,
Have my Cayenne now... Stayed tuned for iPad install. Its in the works. Have mtg after new year with some tech guys. Not going to be as simple as was my truck though. Vents, seat warmers, and more to be reconciled.

I look forward to seeing it installed. I saw one done in a vw gti last summer that looked flawless. Had the I-Pad mounted vertically in a custom fiberglassed surround, and the thing looked like it was meant to be there.
Can't wait to see yours.

install bits
"By far the most innovative install at SBN 2011. A fully motorized iPad 2 integration in the dash of a Porsche Cayenne S. Not only does it provide security but provides adjustable viewing and operational angles. When fully open it reveals a Pioneer double din DVD unit behind it. This first of its kind install had its debut at Spring Break Nationals in Daytona Beach FL at the Phoenix Gold Stinger booth. All work was performed by Underground auto styling in Sarasota Srq Florida. The graphic content of the iPad also displayed on all the 9 tv screens via an iSimple cable. A Phoenix ti2 10" subwoofer, component speakers and the new SD amps provided the audio. The Cayenne had custom 26" wheels and lights also done by Underground"
You can screen shot the build specs from infront of the car.............but the 26 inch rims scream Snowbird from Jersey in Florida.
