Perhaps, if you want to keep the car for long, the S being a V8 might have longer potential longevity, as it would be less stressed through its lifespan?

 

Well I thought about it for awhile and pulled the trigger on the S.

Vehicle is currently cruising across the Atlantic. I believe these new Cayenne's are going to remain desirable vehicles. There is a change taking place and BMW is dropping off - especially with the new 5 series that evokes Lexus-like geriatric sophistication.

Porsche sales are up and this generation is going to remain desirable. With the rise of the Panamera it will only help this generation of Cayennes remain sought after.

When you think of Porsche as a company now- cayenne and panamera are fundamentally changing it. I hope the new 911 is truly a step forward in design.

 

I had a 957 V6 loaner and didn't like it. Not enough power and the V6 was noisy and unrefined when you caned it. Are the 2011+ V6s better?

Don't know why, but Turbo IIs not offered on V6. The only 21" wheel offered is the SportEdition.

 

S provide the last kick down the end ( high rpm ) to give it a boost feel

 

For a few months my wife has wanted to get out of her BMW 3 series and into an SUV for the added space when we go skiing. She looked and looked, first at the medium priced cars, then the BMW X5 and finally the Cayenne. Initially I encouraged her to be happy with the Cayenne V6. Then I read a few reviews that indicated it was a VW engine and that it was a bit underpowered and had some offputting sounds for the reviewer. If you google for reviews you'll see these and some of them really tore into the V6. I drove the V6 and then the V8 and thought the V8/S was much smoother and more powerful.

Interestingly there are a few articles that describe why the V6 is from VW and not the outstanding V6 that's in the Panamera. Turns out when the Touraug/Cayenne was first designed that Porsche contractually committed to using VW V6 engines for the first 2 generations of the Cayenne. That gave enough impetus for VW to build the engine factory. Since then, Porsche designed their own V6 for the Panamera and its got great reviews and of course VW is in the process of acquiring Porsche. Perhaps when that acquisition is complete, Porsche can start using their own V6. Or for us Americans, sell the Diesel (also a VW) in the U.S..

I wanted to save money by getting the V6 but ended up with the S/V8. It does have more standard features including bigger brakes, but I really wanted to save money. No such luck!

We've had the S for about 3 weeks now and it's been good so far. My only concern is that I needed to put in a quart of oil after only 500 miles. Hopefully that's a break in issue although I do see other postings about oil consumption in this and other forums.

My wife gets about 18 MPG when driving around town and today we drove about 75 miles on the highway at speeds between 70 and 85 and got 23 MPG.

I'm just going to have to delay retirement by another year or so to pay for it!

Our car is in meteor gray, with black full leather interior, bixenons, heated/ventilated seats, nav, bose and a few other goodies. It was my second Porsche purchase from Herb Chambers Porsche in Boston and like my 911 purchase, I think I got a good deal.

 

Bob, I have an S similar to yours and I put a quart in at 1300 miles and just put another quart in at 2700 miles, so that seems to be the average use. I've come to accept it and just keep a few quarts with me in the back area. It could be worse; atleast it's predictable and considered 'normal'.

 

i know new ones have better performance than older v6 but it was underpowered in previous gen imo.

 

i am also shopping for a cayenne, considering 2006 v6 with rare 6 spd. if it were the 2008 with the 3.6 it would be a no brainer, but the 3.2 does scare me as the automatic is a bit anemic. the issue is the 6 spd is so rare i can't test drive it as the only one i found is 2000 miles away. anybody out there have one? thx

 

When I purchased, I drove both....I liked that on the highway in 90 degrees and ac blasting---touch the pedal with the S and it gets out of its own way! In the same scenario in the v6, I felt some slight hesitation. I will agree with the others though when they say if you are happy with the v6 go for it. My additional recommendation would be that it you are a speed nut don't drive the S...otherwise when you buy the v6, give it about 3 months before your kicking yourself.
