Should I go from 18" to 20" tires?

Ok....I will post pics tomorrow. I had the new 19's put on this weekend and I'm trying to figure out the tire pressure; maybe you can help me. When I drove for the 1st time my car's handling was awful but I quickly realized that the tires were over inflated (50 psi each). So I released some air & I'm down to 38 - 39 front & 42 - 43 rear (I don't trust my eyes....long story) and now my car is pulling to the left at 80 mph w/minor steering wheel vibrations. I'm having the tire shop check the tires tomorrow.... I don't think I need an alignment because I didn't have this problem with my OE 18's. Any thoughts before I go in tomorrow and spend unnecessary $'s? Thanks

Strange. Did it pull before you let some air out? If it did, it is possible that the tire guys could have knocked it out of alignment but this is what I would try first:

It would be good to have an air compressor or at least a 12v portable one you can plug into the truck so you can air the tires as needed and BEFORE your truck is driven (this means the tires will be cold and driving has not changed the pressure) check the pressure. I would then use Porsche's recommended pressure for each tire. I can't remember where it's posted on the vehicle but check the inside of the gas door. Then take it for a ride at various speeds to see how it does. If you are still having a pull in the same direction and/or a vibration, you may either have an alignment problem or a radial pull in a tire or something is off with the new wheel. Either way, have them check it out if there's a distinct pull and vibration.

Good luck and let me know what happens.

Hey.....Thanks so much for the advice. My truck did not pull before changing the tires and If I remember correctly I checked the pressure & let the air out after getting home from a bumpy ride....so the tires were warm. Therefore, I will check again in the morning before driving. And thanks for reminding me about the 12 volt portable because I do have one for my bike....I just forgot about it when I will checking the tires.

Beyond this problem I think the wheels & tires look really good. Since I'm driving to Iowa City this weekend....I really hope this is something simple like air pressure.

Thanks again for the advice....I will let you know how it works out tomorrow.

I had the tires checked again yesterday and they needed to be re-balanced & the alignment was slightly off. So now my truck drives like a luxury Porsche Cayenne instead of the bumpy vibrating thing I was driving the day before. I got it up to 90 mph last night with no pulling or steering wheel vibration & I really can't tell the difference between the 18's & 19's. They just look better.

So here's the pics of before & after........my truck is a little dirty but please let me know what you think. I've done so many minor mods....I think I should post an 05 Mod Thread.

Awesome. Looks much better than the stock ones, which I still have for now. Glad you got it all figured out. I figured it was something simple like balance and alignment.

Thanks.....I'm glad it worked out as well. I was so afraid I'd made a mistake by getting them off eBay at such a steal. But I guess sometimes a good deal is simply just a good deal or one man's trash is another man's treasure.

They are an improvement. They look stock. Are they?

Thanks......Yes they are & they came off a 2011 Cayenne Turbo. I'm not a huge fan of large tires or very low profile tires.....so this was the look I was going for. I can admire 20 & above wheels from afar but they're not me.

There are few new 2011 wheels that have appealed to me; this one works. I have the original Techno 20" and by far they look the best for the "ol" Cayenne. And I have the Turbo II's 18" for my All Terrain tires. And a set of those chunky Turbo 18's for my snow tires. If you need snow tires, put them on your old 18"--I think those large flanges help keep the snow and ice and all out of the brakes.

Great to have OEM wheels because you can drive on those with confidence.

BTW, the 20's are not as comfortable as the 18's.

My roads are ROUGH up here, so I put the tallest tire on her I can but I am baout to return to the 20's for a road trip--they are smooth and quiet, and the roads are better where I am going--down south.

WOW....We get our fair share of snow but nothing like Alaska. Since my 18 tires are still in good shape I'm keeping them for the winter. Confidence is my other reason for sticking with OEM tires. Since I don't know "jack" about cars I figure Porsche parts for a Porsche truck works for me. This is a new world for me.....I drove company cars for years and never had to worry about buying tires or maintaining a car.

I really like the 20" Diamaris but can't really justify the expense and risk (on gravel roads). Still, I would run them if (and when) I could. The Scorpion Ice & Snow performance tire is quiet good. But when it came to AT tires, I went with the TireRack's suggestions. I don't think you can go wrong with Porsche recommendations--provided you can afford them.

Hello,

Still on the fence about getting 20" wheels, just not sure about spending $1700-2,000 to go from 18 to 20.

I do need tires soon, so thinking about the ones in link below. Would offer $750.

Any thoughts?

Even at $820 as advertised that is an excellent buy. I like the wheels and the colored center caps seal the deal for me! I'd buy them if I need 18" wheels. The tires are a nice size; should be quiet, comfortable and give an extra MPG or two.
