Differences between PCM 2.1 models a, b and c

Differences between PCM 2.1 models a, b and c
I have searched and searched and cannot determine the differences between a PCM 2.1 with model numbers 7l5.035.192 with either an a, b or c as its last digit. Is it simply the year produced? If so, is it correct to assume I can upgrade by software so that an a is functionally equivalent to c. Your responses are greatly appreciated.
