Replaced my Battery
Replaced my Battery
I have a 2010 GTS, and I have not had any battery issues, but going on five years so I decided to check the battery. Getting the seat up was pretty straight forward, the hardest part for me was getting the trim pieces off. The date on the battery was 52nd week of 2009, so right around 5 years old. It was hard to make out what the sight glass was telling, but it was showing 12.3 volts which I have been told is low, so I decided to play it safe and replace the battery. Another reason for checking the battery is because all the online sites recommend a group 48 sized battery, but after checking my OEM it looked more like a group 49 size. So I went with a Bosch group 49 size.

New Bosch on the bottom is about the same size as the OEM Moll battery.

One thing about the Bosch battery I got, is it had the vent on the positive side (opposite of the OEM). I was just going to run an extension but found there is zero room in the battery box for a vent on the positive side. I ended up plugging the original Bosch vent and drilling a new hole on the negative side so I could run the stock vent.

Bosch battery came with a vent on the positive side.

I plugged the original vent hole and drilled a new one on the negative side. There is a little dimple there to help line up the hole.

New battery installed using the stock vent tube.

No problem. I didn't want to turn this into a "How to" step by step because there are plenty of those out there. But I took a lot of pictures and if you have a specific question let me know. The group 49 battery is 15 7/16" long and I think a group 48 is 13 to 14" (a bit shorter). They have almost the same specs so either one should work, but I wanted to go with the same size as the OEM battery.
Someone mentioned this on RennList but if you use a jumper battery be careful when you hook up/disconnect it. The wires are hot and you can short it out if you touch the positive cable to any metal. On the plus side this battery allowed me to move my seat when the main battery was disconnected to get max clearance.
