Wheel Spacer Question

Are wheel spacers used for caliper clearance or to get the wheels to fill in the wheel wells better or both?

Could be used for both, but mainly used to align the tires with the wheel wells.

They're used to fill the wheel wells and change the stance of the car - primarily for aesthetic purpose. The only change affecting caliper clearance would be the diameter of the wheel.

They are regularly used for both. If new wheels don't have enough backspace it can help clear the calipers. If you simply want a wider stance that works too. I wouldn't put wheels on that didn't have the proper backspace and/or fit. I don't subscribe to spacers either but they will serve both purposes.
