Links to upgrading Cayenne base pkg sound?

Is amp good enough to swap out better quality speakers? Can OE head be used with an aftermarket amp? How are oe speakers wired?

 

Ive done some very excessive stereo modifications to the CTT......I would definatly go with an aftermarket amp to go with a new set of speakers....the Bose are nice but they are still their stock line. Personally i went with Morel in the front and Focal's in the rear doors. Also i am still running the stock porsche nav to run everything and it does just fine....no problems. I dont know where you are located but my stereo installer is amazing and has done many cayenne's......(Philadelphia area)....he gets them right from the dealer. Depending on how crazy you want to go i would suggest a 600 watt amp for a new set of high quality front speakers and if you want the extra bass another 600 watt amp and a 10 or 12 inch subwoofer....I went with (2) 12inch JL Audio W7 with a 2000watt amp and (2) 600 watts for both sets of speakers. Im also about to add a 5th TV to the CTT.....Right side of the rear view mirror.....pics to come.....

 

I would definatly change the amps,base and speakers. You really cant compare the two when it comes to quality. After doing my sound system my installer showed me the stock amps and base i couldnt believe it, it was the size of a small book. The installation is really complicated and requires a lot of time from what i have heard, so make sure you take it to a shop with a good reputation. Does the Cayenne use copper speaker wires or a different connection? I'm looking for minimum "pain" in the install. I wonder if simply changing out the BASE OE speakers with some good quality efficient speakers would help?

I don't need "killer" system in the Cayenne. In the late 80's I was really into car stereo and had a sponsored pro-ride. I set the World SPL record in 1987 in Anaheim Stadium at the Car Audio Nationals. My hobby gave me a permanent -3dB attenuation in my left ear.

At home I have Mirage Omnipolar speakers and B&K power... I listen to talk radio 75% of the time anyway, I just want a little upgrade for the times I crank up the tunes.

I'm thinking maybe a couple subs in a box, a small amp getting a signal from the OE head unit. I'd like some better speakers though, to get a bit more headroom. I like "crisp" and would prefer something like Diamond Audio. Pretty efficient unlike Focal...

What are the OE sizes so I can shop speakers?

The speakers will be connected to the amplifier via standard copper wire. The HU to amplifier connection I am unsure about. I think you would want to bypass the factory amplifier because you would probably over-work the amp by wiring up 4ohm speakers to it. The factory bose speakers ( i think there is 11 of them) are probably 8ohm.
Gaining "headroom" wont come from speakers. Headroom refers to the amount of power available to the speakers. To have "headroom" you would basically have enough amplifier wattage to adequately power the speakers at normal listening levels without clipping the signal and causing distortion. Having ample headroom would be having sufficient power to drive your speakers to their maximum physical limits before the amplifier signal becomes clipped.
My Diamond Audio HEX's, while efficient, lack midbass. If you dont plan on running a subwoofer I would look elsewhere for speakers. Look for something with strong midbass (Alpine SPX-177R- efficient, great tweeter, great midbass).
I personally have not touched the Cayennes stereo equipment. The germans heavily integrate all the stereo equipment into the vehicle. I just dont see simply adding some new speakers providing any real benefit. I think a complete by-pass of the factory amplifier, in conjunction with something like the JLaudio Cleansweep or the new Alpine VPA-B222, new amplification and new speakers would be the only good route to take. Its going to be an All-or-none type of thing IMHO.

I'm glad to see i'm not the only diamond audio fan out there.

BillCon, odd, but I had a different experience with the diamond audio HEX's. i had the 6.75" ... s600s (silk tweeters), and the mid bass from the 6.75's was so satisfying that i *almost* could listen to them without a sub i had them in a mitsu lancer, with dynamat extreme in the door panel, no baffle behind the speakers.

one of the bass drivers failed, and i replaced them with morel... eh ovations? talk about zero midbass. the sound was clean... crisp if you will, but for pop/rock/ebm the sound was pretty thin.

unfortunately, there are no diamond audio dealers in the seattle area. or are there? signature audio in kirkland was the last one, but they dropped them.

 

I love the factory system in my CTT. By far one of the best factory system's I've ever heard.
