Hey socalcar
Well it has been 10 months for me and I still have not bought the hitch for our Cayenne. (It will be soon. As soon as it cools off we will want to taking the motorcycles to the desert.)
So here is what I have found.
Sunset Porsche......Tow Package $800.00 plus $75.00 for shipping (No Tax)
Curt MFG aftermarket hitch $180.00 (with this hitch you can not use the distribution bars)
Porsche Electronics $250.00 plus shipping from Sunset
Local P Dealer installation $600.00
Now if you have the skills you can install the Hitch your self and take it to the dealer for them to hook up the electronics and program the computer (1 hour @ $160.00)
I also have wondered about the VW hitch. My guess is the the T-Rag and Cayenne hitch is same but the factory electronics being different would worry me.

For me and my needs I thinking about getting the Curt MFG hitch and the Factory Porsche electronics. Do the installation myself and take it to the dealer to program the computer.

The $800.00 package has everything you will need. All the electronics, hardware & even the plastic receiver cap.

I am going to go to McKenna tomorrow I will see if can look at the VW parts and Porsche parts side by side. I will let you know if they are the same.

Also take a look on http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/index.php they have some strong opinions on what type of electric trailer brake controller to use.

There's a VW parts website (1stVWParts.com) that is selling the Touareg tow package for $598. The actual hitch, ballmount, and plastic plug are the same as the Porsche based on the picture, the only ??? is the electrical harness. I sent them an e-mail to see if that's the same harness for a Cayenne.

As for the brake controller, that's my next "to do" item, in addition to the sway controller / weight distribution bits. I'll take a look at the link you sent and let me know what you find out from McKenna. Thanks.

Update from VW: The Touareg Tow Package electronics are different than the Porsche Tow Package.

I was unable to compare the two because McKenna VW did not have a kit in stock
