CS Gas Mileage

I have the habit of reseting my trip computer and checking the mileage to empty everytime that i fill up the car.
Now the question is, how come everytime i fill up it marks 400-420 miles to empty but then im only doing an average of 280 miles everytime before my reserve light comes on?
