Gear indicator question

OK, this is driving me crazy. Usually when I start my Cayenne the gear indicator shows a P and then flashes to an outlined D and then back to P. It then reads normally P,R, N, D1-6. Lately though it flashes the outlined D and stays there until I restart the car, then it returns to normal P-D6. Do I need to have the dealer look at it? Any help you can give me is appreciated. I checked the manual and it says nothing about this.

Sounds like you were slipped the optional disco gear indicator.

(JK)

It's in the manual under return to dealer for repair.

Good luck!

Has this happened to anybody else? Is it something major or can I drive the car for awhile? I only ask because the dealer is 270 miles away.

As long as it drives and shifts correctly drive it to the dealer- just because the indicator malfunctions doesn't mean the transmission is failing. Arrange for a loaner, and ask them to meet you in the middle if a dealer is that far away- that way they can pick-up your car and deliver you the loaner.
There is no reason for the indicator to be malfuntioning.
I have 12K on my Cayenne with zero problems to date.
Good luck!

Just an update. I am stuck in KC waiting for a part. It turns out the condition I described above requires the replacement of the Tiptronic control module. I'll let you know how it all works out.

Got back last night. OMG I believe this is the way this car is supposed to drive. I think this control was already going out when I bought the car. All is well now.

Glad to hear- sounds like they removed the disco verion and replaced it with the heavy metal version!
