Cayenne S 2012 - Has Landed...

Hi All,

Well the 2012 Cayenne S has finally landed at the Downtown Porsche Dealership. John (my rep) sent me some pictures today with it all wrapped up in plastic. Suddenly the wife is all pumped about it; she most recently told me she wanted to keep the Targa and I take the Cayenne .. LOL.

I will update the thread as time goes on and have reserved a few spaces for future updates. Now I need to make some decisions on tire/rim warranty and clear bra. I never got my 911 wrapped and knock on wood not one ding on the bumper however I could say the same for the for the right door (massive door ding) .

Cayenne Options Include:
White/Black - Full Leather w/ F&R Head Crests
Comfort & Bose Package (huge list here)
PDCC & PTV & Porsche Entry/Drive
Compass & Cargo Management
Panameric Roof & 21" Cayenne Sport Wheels

Finally got it :)

Well after going back and forth on payment options with my accountant looks like we finally nailed it. These cars ain't cheap ! However pickup was fantastic and as always downtown Porsche (John and Sonia) were spot on for a great experience. Enjoy the pictures... and I added 5 years tire and rim warranty because these 21s are just stunning!

I will add more pictures later something is wrong with the site and its not accepting the images.

Initial scattered impressions and thoughts

Just so you know this is the first custom order and automatic car we have ever owned. Most of the time I have picked up something from the lot and I have never ever owned a true automatic, closest ever got to it was that SMG disaster in the M5. Where do I start. First off I think this is has to be the most beautiful SUV on the road hands down - the options, finishing, and lines are just fantastic. The full leather interior is beautiful but in retrospect I would at minimum optioned contrast stitching because you can't really tell its leather everywhere unless you know cars. Or the other option would be to go with a leather like colour rather then black - only reason I did not was carpet area could not be black because the salt and mud in the winter is a disaster here. I think black will also serves us better for the upcoming family we are trying to build (babies etc.).

The Porsche entry and drive is kind of confusing compared to the BMW one but I am sure we will get it eventually. Like the 911, the PCM is spot on and I love the added dash LCD, so cool. The Porsche crests are a nice touch and so is the cargo management when we actually put stuff in that flies around.

The drive is quite nice and smooth, what you would expect from a 4ton+ SUV. The V8 purrs along very smoothly shifting effortlessly as it searches for the most economical gear. The PTV is incredible and its almost like a whipping feeling when you are making a U turn. The PDCC is there but I really have not tested it enough to know what it does; all I know is this car does not lean at all. Coming from the 911 and the 135 this is a BIG car for us and we are not use to it yet. One thing I will admit to is that I dislike automatics and only really agreed to get it because of the wife's insistence that we needed that for kids (even though she drives manual) - I am still not 100% convinced but give me time . Nothing, not even sport mode, could make this V8 REV (then again I am not use to someone switching for me ) - I mean it has some good pickup and grunt but the engine is too quite and the cabin is so good at insulting sound because with the windows down you can here the nice sounds, maybe PSE would help. I am not 100% sure how to use the manual shifting but I found that even in manual mode the car kept up-shifting on its own - I will have to do more research and stop trying to compare it to the PDK I tested on the Panamera.

Over and above I think this will be a great family car and something that will be a nice change from the 911. I do have a feeling that both my wife and I will still be fighting over who has the keys to the Targa until we have a kids or need to haul people around. More impressions coming soon.

I had a BMW with entry/drive and also have it on my Cayenne. The main difference is that with the Porsche, you can either unlock just the door you grab, or adjust in the PCM to unlock all doors. Grabbing a passenger door on the BMW would unlock all doors, but it would only unlock the driver's door if you grabbed that handle, which is also how it worked on my old Lexus.

It bugged me at first, as I liked the way it worked on the BMW and Lexus, but I now have it set to unlock all doors no matter which one you grab to open and have gotten used to it. I still don't like the ugly ignition switch (Porsche could easily do so much better, esp with how great the rest of the interior looks), but I wouldn't want to be without it.

Nice review btw!

Congratulations! Wait until the break-in to pass to much judgement. The sports mode changes the mapping and exhaust note a bit. However, the Cayenne S compared to the 135 and 911...it's an SUV and damn good one, but still...maybe you need a CTT?

In the meantime, enjoy your new Cayenne S.

Hehe ... yes probably not but today will be day 2 and I will work on it. I did some reading last night about manual mode and apparently if you don't touch the paddles it will auto shift. ?
