USB Flash Drive help please

Not a techie. Bought a NEW 32gig USB flash drive at Best Buy for downloading CDs but did not work. Friends very OLD 4gig works fine. Anyone know what to buy for 2012 with PCM but no Bose? thanks.

Maybe it needs to be formatted? But I'd find it strange that it was not already formatted to begin with.
