Thoughts: Cayenne S or BMW 5 series

So I was pretty much ready to pull the trigger on the 5 series (535 or 550), and the Cayenne came into radar...and its quite a good vehicle. We also have a Panamera 4. I do only highway driving 200 km x 2 times a week, not much daily.

Its likely that the Cayenne S would be driven by the family and we would get the Burmester option and I'll take the Panamera 4 (I prefer exec type cars) and occasionally use the Cayenne.

Which one would you pick? THe price point is at a level where I have no problems bumping up to the Cayenne if its worth another 10 K jump, which I feel it is.

This could also be phrased: 535xi or Panamera 4, as I'll prob see more the Panny, but the purchase choice is Cayenne S or 535xi. (The 550xi was unimpressive, too heavy, too laggy and engine).

Serious thoughts, I'm planning on making a decision in the next 2 weeks. My main concern is that the Cayenne won't be as smooth as the 5 series on the highway/as accomplished a cruiser? Your thoughts as owners? I am looking for a pleasant/easy 2 hour drive, in comfort.

Since you already drove 550xi, you just gotta test drive Cayenne S I was impressed with base Cayenne TBH.

Thanks, this is the opinion I wanted to know. We'll for sure get thee Burmester, just a family personal thing.

I was worried about the driving dynamics? Will the Cayenne S be better/or at least as good to drive at the 535xi or 550xi for a long term car? I found the 535 to be a fun car.

But just too overpriced for what it is (In canada at least it runs 75 K) and the Cayenne (give that we have a Panamera and are very happy with it) - found it to be a good car.

Definitely test drive the Cayenne. I've a feeling you'll like it

Bought my CT for the wife and thought I would drive it once in a while. Turns out I'm driving it as my everyday car!

Also Burmester is an awesome upgrade if like me, you love your music.

Let us know what you decide

I was actually at the BMW dealer, about to leave a deposit on a 2011 535xi. My wife called from her salon and mentioned that there was a Porsche dealer right next door and that the new Cayenne had to be considered.. Long story short I test drove the CS and left a deposit right after.
It's been almost 2 years and getting into my car and driving every morning still puts a huge smile on my face. The CS drives just like a car...handles as well as the 5 series...and definitely has the acceleration. Get the Cayenne you'll be glad you did.

A year ago I placed an order for 550xi, but then test drove CS. Sure enough I cancelled my BMW order. You can't compare the quality of craftsmanship, reliability (just read Bimmerfest forum about the problems with 5-ers) and overall value of those 2 cars. Also, how many 5-ers vs CSs do you see on any given day?

I have only good things to say about the Cayenne, I have owned 4 and never had any problems with them. The best buy is the S, you get great power and good dynamic, IMO the only must as extra is Air suspension, this will allow you to go from comfortable cruising to very aggressive setup by a touch of a button.

Honestly I think the Cayenne S is the best all-round car ever made.

Come on, you ask this question of BMW 5 series vs. Cayenne on a Cayenne forum.

I bet if you asked the same question on the BMW 5 series forums, they'd say, "Why would you buy that big tub when you can have this beautiful new BMW which handles like a dream?"

do a European Delivery of your Cayenne. Pickup in Leipzig Germany and experience the tracks there then drive around and return to US and get your car a month or 2 later. OR You can always do a European Delivery for your X5 by having them ship from SOUTH CAROLINA to Europe, drive around and then ship back.

I would suggest getting the PASM option if you were to get the Cayenne. Getting this, you'll definitely feel that "smoothness" and comfort. It's like riding on air (literally). Then, at a flick of a switch, you can get a nice aggressive stance and suspension for spirited runs. It's really 2 cars in one. I haven't done any research on the 5 series but unless it has the same air suspension in it, then you're really going to have a tight, harsh ride or a soft ride with a less aggressive suspension. So, you only get one mode. But like I said, I haven't done research into it so I can't really say 100%. One thing I do know is that BMWs are so common and bland (IMO) that you'll just be another "bimmer owner". Whereas the Cayenne's sleek, curvy lines are more unique and eye catching around town. Again, all these are just my opinion and yes I'm biased. :P
