2013 cayenne
This is how you do it for an automatic, no idea about a manual.
1. Twist the bottom barrel on the **** to unlock it. My tech did it by hand but I needed a rubber strap wrench.
2. Pull the button outward (towards the PCM). Again my tech could do it with his fingers, but I needed to use a pick to help pry it out to get a good finger hold.
3. While holding the button out, lift the **** off the selector shaft.
When reinstalling pull the button out and then slide in back on.
Should you (like me) break it (I didn't know to pull the button out), the car is still drivable by pulling the white plastic rod up and the moving the selector shaft backwards (use the aluminum shaft to shift, not the plastic bit). You'll have to pull the plastic rod to get it back in park too.
